Newbie Stumped - How do I Import MXF files in Xpress Pro HD?

    Hello All,

Well I solved my Avid & Pro Tools Installation problem and finally have the system up and running.  Now I want to import a bunch of MXF files that were recorded on the Sony XD-1500 deck.  I am working on Avid Xpress Studio HD v 5.2.1 using Pro Tools LE 6.5.3r2 and the HP xw8400 Workstation.

The MXF files are all there, but every time I try to import them I get an error message saying "An ACCESS_VIOLATION exception occured"; and thenwhen I click OK I get another error message saying "The import file is not a supported XDCAM MXF file".  Can someone please instruct me on the proper way to import these files?  Thanks a million.

welcome...where are the mxf files??  They need to be in an avid mediafiles folder, you should have one on/in whatever your media drive is.  Find the "Avid Mediafiles? folder, open it an you will find a folder called mxf, open that and you will find a folder probably called "1"....make a new folder next to the 1 called 2..... take all your mxf files and put them in"2", launch the avid app.  It should then rescan the disk with the mxf folder in it.  Once in your project on the avid go to "media tool" and choose the drive that contains your mxf files.  A bin will open and there are your clips.   The key is that the avid uses mxf files directly so there is no importing necessary.  have fun ...let us know how it goes..

Note: You will also need to trash the database files (msmFMID.pmr and msmMMOB.mdb) in the mediafiles folder (x:\Avid MediaFiles\MXF\1) in order to have the content reindexed during the launch of Xpress Pro.

[I believe MXF files were initially supported in Xpress Pro version 4.5, fwiw.]

Not all MXF file are created equally.  P2 uses MXF, but those files do not require being in the Avid MediaFiles folder.  XDcam also uses MXF and they don't need to be in the Avid MediaFiles folder.

The Avid MediaFiles folder is for MXF files created by Avid when captured or imported.  It sounds like the OP has some MXF files from a camera and they need to just get these files into an Avid readable format.

If the OP had version 3.5 or higher they might be able to take advantage of AMA and see the clips.

Have you tried importing XDCAM Proxies from that disk. Or from a camera original disk in the 1500?

FWIW in the past importing proxies first and the batch importing at full res from the proxies has solved error errors between XDCam deck and Avid for me.

Thanks for the continued dongle support
