Can we have the Film masks labeling revised for 16x9 and HD projects? Applying a 16x9 effect does not create a 16x9 mask in these projects, and also 1.66 and 1.85 are incorrect. Looks like SD 4x3 legacy...
Perhaps revise the way the Grid settings work, while we're at it. Now, you have to set "4x3 outside 16x9" in order to have correct aspect ratio markers in the grid. Also SD 4x3 legacy, I think.

So my new wife asks me about my "Avid Forever" tattoo... I told her she's an old girlfriend who was always coming up with new things for me to try...

Can you expand on this Job?
You mean that the grid is false at HD?

I think Job means "4:3 inside 16:9 Monitor". But in any case the Avid's default grids bare no resemblance to the real world.
As for the Film Mask, yeah, it seems to be one of Avid's many 4:3 legacy annoyances. Surely at some point a major new release of Avid apps should default everything to 16:9 and make 4:3 the secondary option.
Even in HD mode a 1.85:1 mask comes in at 2.46:1 - pretty pathetic from Avid really.

Why you say that? All of my tests for the shows we are making are ok at tv sets and at broadcasting.
I am refering to titles only.
We get a PS grid guide from the BBC to calibrate our grid settings. When you put this against the default Avid grid, it's off.
And things like 4:3 safe title within 16:9 are completely out.
If you like I'll send you a copy.
Please do so!
Is this for every ratio?
And is it easy to set it up for MC?

Here's a link. There's a guide to setting up.

but it's only for 16:9 SD - not sure if it relates internationally though - also things change all the time.
Most of our stuff just has to be 14:9 safe for pics and graphics / 4:3 safe for text.
Thanks a lot Jake.

No, I don't.
If you're in a 16x9 or HD project, and need to have 1.85:1 gridlines, you need to tell your Avid that 4x3 resides outside 16x9. In "normal" mode, the aspect ratio of the grid is distorted. If you are in 4x3-inside-16x9-mode, it places the grid as a picture-in-picture. All other settings assume 4x3.
Unless you tell your grid that 4x3 resides outside 16x9. Then it appears to be correct.
Gotcha! Thought you were still talking about the Mask effect.

I'm still right about the Mask presets.
Then we are in common confusion AND agreement. ;-)

The BBC/EBU 4:3 protect in 16:9 is a comprimise. What Avid's guide shows is a true 4:3 safe within a 16:9 raster, but the BBC spec for 4:3 in widescreen splits the difference a bit, reducing the action and title safe margins to 3.5% if I recall correctly.
While that's acceptable to the BBC (as it's their spec) it's not really 4:3 safety within 16:9 and might fail with other broadcasters.
The grids in Media Composer are correct by a strict interpretaion.
Also, for what it's worth, the frame-edge line in Avid's 4:3 in 16:9 is close enough to 14:9 title safe that it's usually pretty good for that.

My opinions are my own.

At least I don't see any problem to titles when placed on a 16:9 or 4:3 project following MC's grid.
Now graphics might be a different story.
