    Re: Introducing Media Composer 4!

The problem is Avid, like many other developers including myself, only has access to R3D files through the SDK provided by RED. It doesn't offer anything like the performace requried to provide the real-time editability that Media Composer users expect and demand.

On the Mac platform FCP is only able to accomplish that because RED has created and released a Quicktime plugin that provides native wavelet proxy access. And Adobe's RED support, if I understand correctly (I haven't used it) was developed with high-level input and assistance from RED.

Basically they are right - both companies would need to be directly involved and co-operating. It's not clear how interested either would be in that, but neither have publicly said one way or the other really. Ideally with RED's input an AMA plugin could be developed to support RED's wavelet compression, but that would require a lot of support from RED and is well beyond what Avid can do on their own.

That said - the "Big People" using RED are usually content to setup solid workflows to deal with their footage. Meaning Metafuze is a fine approach.

I am focusing on the positive energy only and one very good addition is what Avid calls Transition Preservation.

Take a look. How many times I have thought how can I not remove transitions when I move clips.

The answer is in Composer 4! Yes

Full RED and Canon 5D support in MC 4?

What is full RED support in your opinion? The MetaFuze route works well.

Metafuze is limited at this time. On a Pal feature film it's a bit too much to work with 1080 25p files for offline.
720 25p would be better and with redspace so that you don't have to neutralize the blacks with and render each time you screen the movie.

Full RED support is being able to edit the R3Ds on location. Working as a DMT and editor I can edit a scene while they are shooting more covarage for it, enabling me to give a thumb up if the scene works. That is a major help for the director and the whole production (and post). Full RED support means no rendering.

AMA can do this, the door is open, Avid and Red just have to come together and fix it. Why they aren't doing it is beyond me. Either Apple is paying Red a huge amount of money to keep Avid out or there's too much pride or something...   either way, this deadlock isn't going away on it's own.

This new feature does look interesting - could be a real time saver - thanks for posting. It would also seem that the lastest BCC ships with MC 4. I'm very interested to know what an upgrade from 3.5.4 with the bundled software will cost (I hope Marianna will have these details sometime this week).

    Re: Introducing Media Composer 4!

If the 3.5.4 from 2.7 is about 400$ I am sure this can't be more expensive.

I will probably buy it again with the bundled upgrades at disc not the download.

    Re: Introducing Media Composer 4!

I bought the $400 upgrade to 3.54 on August 24, will this upgrade to 4.0 be free?

Should I have waited one week to upgrade?

    Please tell me no

    Thanks, Steve

Steve, unfortunately, yea. You will likely need to pay. The reality is, there must be a cut off time and whatever that is, there will be people on the other side.

Talk to your dealer. Often dealers can help in this situation.

    Glans...

Yes it does.  If you bought the 3.5 upgrade or a new 3.5 unit after Sept 1 then you get the upgrade when available free.  Details to follow.

    Marianna

    Hi

The new features sound great, I'm just more interested in whether it fixes the bugs from 3.5.4 and it seems a bit unfair to have to pay for an upgrade to 4.0 when we only bought 3.5.4 in the last week of August.Huh?

The cut off date is for "either" purchases or upgrades.  The same date applies to both ... from the post above:

Yes I did pick up that from the previous post thanks, what I was saying is I'd like a version of the software that works properly and not have to pay for it to work! :-)

I doubt it. W7 is scheduled to be released after this release. Although beta and RC have been available, Avid tests only with publicly released official version of OS.

    Re: Introducing Media Composer 4!

When I bought the upgrade from Liquid to MC (1300 Euros) it was the end of January I think.

Two weeks later it came the 3.5 or something like that. And I was telling myself the same thing.

But I was forgetting that Marianna (mainly) saved me 1000 euros from buying MC without the upgrade.

I haven't yet upgraded because I didn't have the money but I want to upgrade at 4.

You can't really say "should I have waited one week?". This is a negative thought.

    Get rid of it.
