    Re: MC 4

It is amazing what happens when I am asleep in Japan!

In answer to the earlier question about the 3rd party pack, I found this information

"Production Suite updates: Include new versions of Boris Continuum Complete, Sorenson Squeeze and SmartSound Sonicfire Pro to provide customers with more creative possibilities and media delivery options. "

in a few articles on the 4.0 release.

    Here is an example:     http://videography.com/article/86772

Of course, we will all have to wait until the full facts are released.

The Field Motion can be Interlaced/Progressive/2:3 Film/Progressive Strobe

I've not heard the term Progessive Stobe -- and Google isn't helping either -- can someone fill me in?

Also, I think the questions regarding framerates may best be summarized as:

Will this new feature work with any "source" rate -- within any "project" rate?

    Thanks

    BLKDOG:

Like film editor Steve Cohen has said in numerous press releases, "it's just like Magic". You add the mixed media into the timeline and it just plays in full quality. In order to go out to a deck, you simply drop the timeline into the appropriate project type and play it out to tape.

Thanks to bwilhelm and yourself for responding to my question so quickly.  It seems like a really good way to work with media and will be especially helpful with P2 workflows.  If you wouldn't mind I would like to restate my question about Edit to Tape.  Say I am working on an SD NTSC project and my footage is a combination of normal SD NTSC and 720p/23.98 DVCProHD from a P2 card.  If have the project in NTSC 30i mode and go to make a Digital Cut to DigiBeta will the Avid still ask me to Transcode or do I just need to render my new Timewarps?

Thank you very much for answering these questions.  It's very exciting to see so many changes and new ideas incorporated into Avid in such a short period of time.

You would simply render out the speed effects to go out to tape Sam.

Dongles - thankyou!  Whilst I'll almost certainly stay on the upgrade path and buy this, does the release of v4 mean that the documented timeline settings bugs will not be addressed in a patch to v3.5.4?

    Re: MC 4

So timelines can be moved between project types?

Also, if I have 30fps material and drop it into a 24fps timeline, can I choose to have it play back frame-for-frame (ie slightly slo-mo), or will it always be resped to be realtime?

    taylormade:

Well, I knew it.  I posted a few weeks ago asking about MC4 and was told not to speculate despite a qualified AVID retailer telling me it was coming out.  I asked here if I could wait until I got back from a shoot in Europe (back October 11th) to upgrade from my Xpress Pro to MC for $495.  No problem everyone said.  So, my question, does the upgrade offer still stand or do I have to get my wife to rush out and buy the MC3.5 upgrade before the 15th or lose out on the offer and have to pay the full $2300 when I get back?

Inquiring minds want - and need - to know.

Honestly, I have no idea why you are bent out of shape. If you don't believe what was written about the AXP to MC upgrade policy, just go and buy MC 3.5  at the upgrade price through the 16th, and then upgrade to 4.0 for free when you feel like it.

People here are only trying to be helpful, and am I'm sure Avid is not trying to trick you somehow.

And didn't the advice given here actually help you? If you had purchased 3.5 weeks ago, you would not qualify for the free upgrade. That seems to warrant something closer to a "Thank you" than a "Well, I knew it." IMHO.

Like BMF says, if you're really worried about it, go get MC 3.5.4 now for $495, because according to this post:

    marianna:
Anyone who bought {MC 3.5.4} from Sept 1 through Sept 16 can download {MC 4.0} free from a protect page once we go live later this month.  I'll fill you all in on the details next week.

If I'm reading all this right, if you upgrade from Xpress Pro to MC 3.5.4 today (11 Sep 2009), you'll be in the safe period and eligible for the free upgrade to MC 4.0 when it comes out.

And if I understand the Xpress Pro to MC upgrade policy, the price is a set price with no expiration.

So whichever way you go, I think you'll be ok.

MC 3.5.4, HP dv9605ea, Vista Home Premium, AMD Athlon 1.8 GHz, 4 GB RAM, nVidia GeForce 7150M, Conexant HD Audio, G-tech 500GB G-drive [view my complete system specs]

Everything about upgrade is for Liquid or other users to worry.

I don't believe that Avid would not care about their own old time customers.

It will still ask you to transcode - even if the timewarps are rendered -
but you can choose "Continue without transcode" and ignore the message
to continue with the digital cut.
