Anybody know how to set up the menu on an HDCAM HDW D1800 deck so it will record HD Closed captioning data? I'm not creating the CC just want to be able to record the CC data from a CC hardware encoder onto HDCAM tape for a PBS Documentary delivery. I believe you have to turn something on in the deck to do this and the manual doesn't have any information on this.
From the PBS TOS submission form:
For High Definition submissions, CEA-708-C
captions with "608 compatibility bytes" must be
carried in the ancillary data space (ANC) per SMPTE
334M-2000. The captioning ANC data must be
present on line 9.

It's embedded in the ancillary data by the hardware box. I don't believe you have to turn anything on in the deck.
Do a test and check the deck out on a CC aware monitor.

Thanks Terence,
I'm just researching now. I don't have the CC box here. I don't know where I read that you had to turn something on in the menus. I'll try to figure out where I heard that and post back.
By the way I sent you an email the other day with some questions for you about your company. Did you receive it?
Thanks,
Derrick

Found this on the Cow. Does this make any sense?

No. Did you send it to TCurren(at)AOL.com

Potentially. It makes sense that you could blank lines of information in the ancillary data. It's nice that Sony makes it so easy to understand in their manual... ;-)
I have the 5500 and the 5800 decks. So I'm not sure what is on the 1800. I would unblank all the incoming lines on the VTR per the link you found. Then make sure the caption box or software is set to place it on line 9 per the delivery requirements.
Why this setting is hidden in a maintenance menu is ridiculous.
It's in a maintenacne menu because it's Sony. Why is the 4 channel vs 8 channel on an IMX deck require a dip switch to enable entry into the maintenance menu to get to the oh so obviouse Data length or some such name to change from 4 to 8 channels?

These settings I found on the creative cow ended up working fine.
In the HDW-1800 deck: Enter the maintenance menu: 1/ Alt - f9 2/ MAINT MODE/OTHERS/VANC RX PARAMETER (For 708 Compliant CC) Line 1 Line 2 DID SDID 009 572 61 01 3/ Don't blank any lines
