Guys,
I know that 3.5 is supposed to be able to import partial QTs (by this I mean just the section of a QT that is used and not the whole file), but for the life of me I can't get it to just import the section I want.
Has anyone else been able to do it, or have I misread something, i.e. is it just an XDCam Import feature?
Cheers,
Ra-ey
Please correct me if i am wrong, but i think that this is not a feature supported in 3.5, and definitely not supported in earlier versions, unfortunately. It is because avid cannot read timecode from quicktime files. So as far as i know, if you want to batch import, you will be importing the entire clip, not just the section of it in your sequence. I am working in 3.0 and did not learn of this fact until it was time to batch import on a recent project. Had i realized this, i would have just captured 1:1 and saved myself the hassle. Good luck.

How do you "know" this? I haven't heard nor read anywhere about anything like that being available.

I think your misunderstanding is based on XDcam workflow and the ability to use partial clips when upresing.

Thomas, you are correct that up until 3.5 you couldn't, but as the ReadMe for v3.5 says:
- Avid supports embedded timecode when you export to XDCAM.- Avid supports embedded timecode when you export a QuickTime movie
It also reads embedded timecode when you import. Do a test, it works!
I guess, like Neil suggests, I got the fact that the Avid can bring in partial XDCam files confused with the hope that it could do the same with QTs, as it now can actually read the TC.
However, I swear I read somewhere on here that someone said it was possible. Must be imagining things...
Avid does support TC reading in QTs now.
You should do a test decompose selecting the "imports" in the dialog box when you do it. Then try batch importing to the decomposed clips. I don't know if this works, but theoretically it would be the way to get there.

Thanks Terence, yeah that's what I thought, but unfortunately this doesn't work. After the decompose, if you look at the duration of the clip, it's identical to that of the original QT file.
Shame, this would be a great timesaver for us, especially for a massive upcoming project.
The question arises: should the Avid be able to import partial QTs (as it does with XDCam), therefore it's a bug that it doesn't; or, is this functionality not available yet (which is what I suspect).
If anyone else gets a chance to test this, it would be much appreciated.
