Relinking Red Footage mxf transcode using metafuze on a interplay workstation

I have finished transcoding some Red footage to DNxHD 36 using Metafuze. I put the transcoded mfx files into the Avid MediaFiles folder. It does not relink. I have tried dynamic relink settings and this does not work. I have verified that it is in the correct media folder by importing a graphic and revealing file.

I have copied these media files to a external drive, disconnected unity and interplay and these files relink fine.

How can I get my transcoded DNxHD 36 mxf files to relink using unity and interplay?

How are you attempting to relink? Try relinking by specific resolution, and set it to dnx 36. also check to relink to only media from current project.

Avid MC v3.0, windows vists sp1, gigabyte ga-ex58-ud4p mobo,6GB 1800 Mhz ram, nvidia quadro fx 1800, 500 GB 7200 rpm boot drive, 1TB 7200 rpm media drive... [view my complete system specs]

I tried that and every other dynamic relink setting. I even tried pointing directly to the mxf folder when transcoding from metafuze and I still cannot get the media to link.

I imported the ALE checked in the bin then brought the transcoded mfx file into the avidMedia folder, nothing is  working.

    same issue for me

    interplay 1.6, MC 3.5.4 and Metafuze 2.0

Working on the same issue with someone else; it took a few days but I found one workaround so far (long story short = IP's MI enabled service changes the way "regular relink" works --- that's the theory but waiting to confirm with others first)

Below is an email I sent off explaining this (apologies for the formatting -- copy / paste isn't working as expected, from my email to this forum --- will re-edit later):

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=UP00EXTC ---- watch the Red no work video first, and then the Red works video

Conclusion: You can use Red files with Interplay, but it involves a combination of stopping IP services, relinking (regular), connecting to IP, then consolidating to workspaces, and checking files into IP.  There are my steps :

Used MC 3.0.5 and 3.5 (videos show 3.0.5 as demo)

    IP 1.4.2 / ISIS 2.0.1

    DNxHD 36

    1080p/23.976

    1. At this point, I already downloaded sampe R3D files, and used Metafuze to create MXFs and ALES.  I put the MXFs into the C / Avid Media Files sector.  I logged into Interplay, and made sure it was scanning C drive.

    2. Import the ALEs in a 1080/23976 project - tried a regular Relink - No Clips relinked (I noticed though... the option I wanted to use, Relink Offline Master Clips to Online items, was grayed out)

    3. I knew these clips were DNxHD36 for a fact - thus tried Dynamic Relink - didn't work (from using Closest Media, and specifically DnxHD 36 option)

** note I tried steps 1-3 again, without logging into IP, and then shutting down only the MI service - no go, on the relink

    -----------------------------------------

    4. Then I closed Avid, turned off all IP services, and relaunched Avid -- opening the same project

    5. All the clips were there, from the ALES - so I tried regular relink again - and the option to Relink Offline... to Online was available - this worked

    6. I did a reveal file on each clip - it relinked to the MXF metafuze files I placed in the C drive

**note i was thinking about putting this on the Unity drives for the relink except... If Avid is installed with Interplay, Avid wont read Unity workspaces, unless you're logged into Interplay.  And to get this relink to work at all (as of now), Interplay services must be shut down, then relink

    -----------------------------------------

    7. Then I closed Avid, turned on IP services, relaunced Avid - opened same project

    8. Logged into IP, - opened the ALEs bin - all media was still online at DNxHD36 (it was looking the C drive)  MI was pointing to the C drive as well as HAG on ISIS workspaces

    9. Thus, I consolidated these clips to the workspaces - once complete, I checked in the clips to IP

    10. Opened Avid editor on other end - checked out the Red clips - make sequence, etc.

11.For kicks, I closed, reopened Avid a few times just to make sure media was still online (and it was)  When I was sure it was, I then removed the MXF metfuze files from the C drive, since everything was consolidated to the ISIS

After al this, I have an idea why DR wont work with the RED files - it is my understanding that DR is used to relink files after some transcoding has been done.  This means, the MXF files must be online first --- then some transcoding or batch capturing at different resolution occurs, and then DR wil relink those files to a specific resolution.

DR is not, to my knowledge, used to link files that have no concept of its raw mxf files.   There must be a simultatenous association made first (e.g. when capturing files, an association is already made between master clip and the captured mxf file--- when importing QT movies etc., an assocation is already made with master clip and the imported mxf files)

With Red files, there is no assocation since we captured the RED mxf file separately from the ALE file.  Hence, why DR isn't working here.

So the only way we can do this: is to Relink (regularly)  However.. with IP services enabled, certain regular Relink options are not available (as I mentieodn before, the "Relink offline to master clips" option is the Relink setting that brought those files online).  It is my belief, if we can get this setting open in IP , then we should be able to relink without going through the process of disconnecting, shutting avid, reconnecting IP services etc.

I haven't been able to try the EDL stuff yet, but will try it later

Re: Relinking Red Footage mxf transcode using metafuze on a interplay workstation

Scratch the message above - I found an easier way instead:

    1. Drag your RED MXF Metafuze files into the C: AvidMediaFiles etc.
    folder
    2. Login to Interplay
    3. Use Media Tool and have it search only C drive - choose all projects
    4. Your Red clips should appear (even though you didn't import the ALES)

    5. I'm pretty sure you'll know what to do from here (consolidate, check
    into IP , etc.)

Used 3.5.4 and IP 1.6, with MI scanning local drives along with HAG / ISIS workspaces --- Media Tool should still work on local drives, like internal C, or fw, scsi. in IP environment
