I recently bought a Mojo SDI and have been trying it out with XDCAM EX HQ 1080/50i footage in a PAL 25i project. I wanted to see what the real-time HD down-conversion was like using MC3.5.4. I connected the Mojo-SDI to a Sony BVM grade-1 monitor through component.
I noticed that if I set the Video Playback Quality to "Full Quality 10-bit" the output was brilliant! It looked like perfect SD footage. However if I set the Video Playback Quality to "Full Quality" the output looked like it was single-field (hard to tell exactly). Bearing in mind that XDCAM is only 8-bit and the only difference between the two settings I used is the bit depth, why would this be? Is this normal? Has it always been like this?
Also I am thinking of recommending a secondhand Mojo Analogue to a colleague who is on a budget. He specifically wants to use the real-time HD down-conversion. As I don't know if Mojo Analogue can be set to "Full Quality 10-bit" (according to the Avid Basic manual p.250 neither Mojo or Mojo-SDI can be set to 10-bit), I don't know what the output is likely to be. Can anyone tell me what the Mojo Analogue HD down-conversion is like on interlaced material when viewed on a CRT monitor?
Thanks.
Hi, it will be same I think, I had a mojo DNA, in fact it's not the mojo doing the downconvert but the soft when project is turned to 25i. You don't even need a mojo, this work the same with a dv deck (just not in sync with the composer monitor). Now i've never connected a mojo dna or sdi since 3.0 and I think this 10bit playback quality wasn't available before, the downconvert quality I had was always a single field preview, no matter if a deck or a mojo was use for monitoring. Maybe sofware downconversion has been improve with MC 3 but I don't see why 10bit playback quality has to be turned on to achieve it (this also means less real time).
FWIW: I have an analog Mojo that use for HD monitoring switching to 25i, it does not go up to full res 10 bit, only green mode, but it looks OK on a Sony broadcast monitor.

Both mojo and mojo sdi show single field only on downconvert. It's ok for grading on a crt. I'm still on 3.0.5, but if the 'full quality 10-bit' setting in 3.5.4 is both fields, then that's a good reason to upgrade. Can any moderators chime in with an official word?

My Mojo MC doesn't allow 10-bit display as in Nitris DX, I've no experience with both Mpjo SDI and Mojo DX.
