    Mojo HD and 1394 error

Can I use Mojo to watch a HD project?  I read somewhere is this forum that Mojo will display a SD picture from a HD soruce or project.  I can't get that the work.

Also, I'm getting a nasty error when capturing DV footage using the 1394 input on Mojo.  It's a bit strange... Using the 1394 input, the computer becomes very sluggish and finilly a long Avid error pops up (sorry can't remember the error)  The captured media is then lost.  I'm capturing DVD footage directly from the DVD player.  My Pioneer DVR-320 has a DV out.  The mojo works great when using the other analog inputs, but the 1394 input will shut down Avid. I never had this problem when using the 1394 input for Express Pro.

Finally, Is it best to capture DVD footage using the S-video or component inputs, or it it better to use the 1394 firewire input.  What has the highest quality?

FW will give you a straight digital (1's and 0's) transfer.  Component is better than S-video and S-Video is better than Composite.

You just flip the project type from HD to it's SD equivalent.  If you're project is 1080i/5994 for example, flip to 30i and you'll get output to your Mojo.  Note that some HD projects do not have an SD equivalent.

Cool.... I was thinking perhaps the DV output of the DVD player was compressed.

Any idea about the firewire problem?  Avid screams on my new computer, but it locks up when using Mojo 1394 capture.

Well techincally it is... but the Mojo or any other FW device connected to the DVD player is not compressing it more.

If you're capturing FW, then just disconnect the Mojo.  You possibly don't have enough bus bandwidth.  Also, it's not recommended to daisy-chain FW devices off of the Mojo, IIRC.

Re: Mojo HD and 1394 error

I'm capturing using the firewire connection on the MOJO.  The Mojo is always connected.  I have not tried to bypass the mojo and capture directly from the DVD deck.  (I really don't want to do that)  I have no other firewire drives connected to this computer, just Mojo.

Don't want to jack with the cables.  Also don't want to restart the computer everytime I capture without Mojo.  You need to restart computer everytime Mojo is disconnector or connected, correct?

No.  You might have to restart MC, but not the whole machine.

Also, with a little planning ahead you could do all your "Mojo-less" capturing in one go and you won't be switching back and forth.

Get another FW cable and connect it to your DV device.  If you know you're going to be capturing via FW, then disconnect the Mojo from the PC and plug in the other FW cable into your PC where the Mojo was connected.  Do your capturing and then when done, you can just reconnect the Mojo cable to your FW card.  It ain't that hard.

Both analogue and sdi mojo will downconvert an HD project to sd for a client monitor. Be aware that the downconvert is single field only, though.

You'll have a problem with downconverting 720 and 24p type projects. Curiosity posted this workaround -

If you are working in 1080, under the Format tab you have the option to switch to SD (30i) and the Mojo will play a "live" downconvert of your seqeunce in SD (single field only - so its not really a "true" downconvert of your material). This option is not available for 720 projects using a Mojo (it is available under the Video Output Tool with an Adrenaline.)

If you are working in some variation of 720 you'll need to find it's compatible SD format and create a new project in that SD format (So for 720p/59.94 you would open a 30i NTSC project.)

    1. Use your HD deck or camera to downconvert the footage as you capture it into the 30i project.
    2. When you are finished editing - open a new 720p project and then open your 30i project's bin into the 720 project.
    3. Duplicate the finished 30i seqeunce to a new bin.
    4. "Modify" the seqeunce to 720p.
    5. Decompose the seqeunce, and batch capture using 720p.
