Hello,
I'm trying to install xpress pro on a dual processor 1.25 ghz g4. I tried version 5.8, but when I try to run it, nothing happens, which makes me think it doesn't run on my platform. Media composer software doesn't run on g4's either, so my question is what is the latest version of software I can run on my system?
thanks
Express Pro is now an EOL (end of life) product and is no longer being sold by Avid. You can upgrade from XPRO to Media Composer for $395.00 without the additional plug-ins, $495.00 with the plug-ins. Here are the version matrices for both Express Pro and Media Composer, to check compatibility with your current system.

I will upgrade to media composer when I buy a new computer, but for now I have a g4. I have been using the avid express products since the introduction of express dv.
Express pro 5.8 wouldn't run on my system, and I couldn't find any info regarding the latest version that would work. So my question remains....
And the answer to your question, as indicated by the XPRO Version Matrix, there is no version of XPRO other than 5.8 and higher that is qualified for OS 10.4.11. That doesn't mean than other versions definitely will not run. It does mean that Avid cannot certify that it will run stable and reliable on that OS. It's up to you whether you think it's worth taking the gamble. You can search ebay for Avid Express Pro -and if you buy anything there, make sure that the dongle is included so you know it's legal.
I'm running XpressPro 5.8.4 on OSX 10.4.11 on a dual 1.6 G4 Quicksilver right now. it works fine for the most part. Things I can't do:
-- Capture analog component footage without an underrun
-- Edit HD material in green mode
Probably other things I can't do that I haven't discovered yet.
That is good to hear. When I try to run 5.8.4 on my dual 1.25 mhz G4, I click on the program to start, the icon would flash quickly and then nothing would happen. No error messages, dongle incompatibility, nothing - it just never starts up!
I assumed it was hardware incompatibility, but now I don't know. Is it possible I downloaded the windows version by accident? I just tried reinstalling it after getting your email, but with the same results.
Any ideas?
Hmm, not sure where to even start.
What kind of G4 do you have? I'm pretty sure that none of the laptops will cut it.
Did you have a version of Avid running before you tried to install 5.8?
What version of Quicktime are you using?
How much Ram do you have?
And probably most important, what kind of video card do you have? I had to upgrade mine. Again if you're on a laptop, probably out of luck.
