AVCHD / mini DV multicam problem - 32 frame error

I'm trying to edit a group clip in MC 3.5.  Two of the cameras I used are Vixia HFS100s.  They generate AVCHD files which I convert to HD mpg using Corel VideoStudio Pro X2.  I then import the mpg files into MC.  My other cameras are a Canon HV10 and a Canon XHA1.  I synced to an electronic flash, so sync was dead on.  When I grouped the clips and began to edit in the quad split view, however, the mini dv captures were 32 frames behind the AVCHD mpg captures.  The mini dvs were correctly synced to each other as were the AVCHDs.  I then grouped a single AVCHD and mini dv, thinking the problem might be an issue created by the use of four files (I had previously been successful using two files).  Again, however, the mini dv was 32 frames behind the AVCHD.  Does anyone have a suggestion?  Does anyone know what the problem is?  Please keep it simple (I'm a newby and I'm still taking things a small step at a time).  Thanks!  I like this board a lot.

I advanced the Mark in on the AVCHD clips 32 frames.  The flash was in sync on all 4 clips in the quad split view.  When I began to edit, however, synchronization was lost.  I'm wondering (I'm a newby so don't laugh), is it possible that AVCHD clips don't have timecode?  If so, I could record the clips onto a mini DV tape and thereby create a timecode?  (UGH ... that's a lot of work).

When you group clips, how are you syncing clips, by inpoints,  source time code, outpoints etc?

I'm grouping by in points.  Also I just discovered that, although Avid imported the Corel converted AVCHD file, the audio / video of the resulting avid file was out of sync.  I think the starting point is going to be for me to find out the precise requirements of Avid for the importing of files ... I have tried sooo many programs.  Most of them except for TMPGenc ... and there I'm stalled because they require a credit card and I don't use those on the net.

Did you try using the Panasonic AVCHD to P2 converter. The current version will only work with Panasonic Cameras. I read somewhere that the older version worked with AVCHD from other manufacturers. Search the forums here for a link. I have used the current version to convert Panasonic AVCHD to P2 and it works great.

Thanks for the information.  I did try the new version of the panasonic utility, but as you mentioned, it only works with panasonic so I'm out of luck there.  As I recall (I'm operating from memory now ... which is dangerous), the Panasonic utility is made by another company that makes a converter program (began with an "M" I believe).  I tried that company's trial conversion program also, but without success.

it is made by Main Concept. I would try to find Version 1.1, it is still out there and is free, it will work with any camera. I think people have had sucess using it.

Re: AVCHD / mini DV multicam problem - 32 frame error

Thank you Lew S!  I was able to get a number of directories including an audio directory with two MXF files and a single video MXF files.  When I tried to import the video file into a bin I had created, MC gave the message: "You cannot import this file into a bin.  See the documentation for information about transferring media files."  So I obviously have a lil research to do, but I think I'm on the right track.

Also, I just tried Xilisoft's HD program (just about every HD flavor it offered).  I was able to successfuly convert into HD mov, HD mp4, and HD mpg4, but upon import into MC all I had was audio.

I just wanted to leave a quick note saying thanks.  I just bookmarked a new post on P2 import and I think that may have the answer.

I believe you need to import the XML file from the clips folder. Try that.

With 3.5 you can use the AMA feature to import P2. From the file menu, use the link to AMA volume command. Then just point to the virtual P2 volume, all files will import.
