Hi,
I am currently tring to demonstrate an Interplay enviroment, and have the installers with a licence for a single seat. I want to run the Interplay Engine and Media Indexer on a single machine using its local storage. When I install all the necessary packages and services I can't create or select a HAG. The entire option box in the Media INdexer service is missing, although the other (Periodic Save, Advanced Settings and Storage) are available.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance- Nik
Hi Nik,
It appears you have installed the "client" version of Media Indexer. The client version of MI has these fields deliberately removed in later versions of the software to prevent editing systems from accidentally being joined as a member of the HAG. (Client systems should be connected to the HAG for indexing requests, but should not be a part of the HAG servicing those indexing requests.)
You need to install the server version of the MI client included in the Interplay installed.
Ed
Hi Ed,
You're probably correct- but I have been over all the different installers- is there anyway to tell if I have used the client versions? I followed the server installation for a 32bit machine.
Cheers
Nik
The splash screens for different versions of Interplay can vary a little bit. However, typically when you first launch the installer there is a choice between "Clients" and "Servers". The correct build of the MI for Servers is under the Server option. (It's the same menu tree that you would use to install the Interplay Engine bundle.)
Unfortunately thats where I've been installing it from- I've tried both vs 1.5 and 1.6- and still no joy!
That's troubling to hear! I was actually here late last evening rebuilding one of my test systems to 1.6, and I had no problem.
If this was just one version you were having a problem with, I would be inclined to suggest that there is a problem with the installer itself. However that doesn't seem to be the case.
What are the platform specifications of the system you are trying to install the "combo build" on ? What server, server OS? I'm assuming the logged on user has administrative privileges ?
Hi Ed-
I'm putting it on an XP box, it's nothing special but then I'm not actually after any performance, just need to test and try Interplay. I've been using the Administrator user. Do you which vs of MI you've been using- I've got 1.2.5.26702
Cheers for all your help- Nik
That could very well be the problem. MI Server requires Windows 2003 server. Interplay Engine requires Win2k3 as well. I understand you aren't looking for performance, however baseline functionality requires the correct operating system. Even for a demo system, you should be using the correct OS build. I have seen problems where installations for the "server" software was erroneously performed on XP client systems, and similar behavior was reported.
There is a way you can work around this. This will also have potential performance and functionality limitations. I have seen some demo artists installing VMware Server or VMware player (among other virtualization applications). You could build a Win2k3 VM. (I believe you can get the Virtual Appliances from Microsoft.) Once the VM is built you can install the necessary applications on the Virtual Machine to emulate a supported platform.
I do want to iterate that the use of a Virtual Machine is in no way shape or form a supported configuration, and only serves the purposes of basic demonstration. If you are looking to demonstrate the full capacity of Interplay, and it's features, you will need to install it in a qualified environment.
Thanks for your help- I've found a 2K3 build and its working!
Cheers again,
Hey Nik!
That's great to hear :)
If you are looking to take a peak under the hood, Health Monitor is a great start. It will give you an indication of what and how the files are being indexed. If you run the Interplay Diagnostics application, and set the logging levels to finest, you will also see all of the procedure calls made during the indexing process.
Thanks alot for that advice- it's really useful to see what, and when files are actually being indexed.
