HD to SD transcoding and mixdown problem

I´m working on 1080i project which contains HD clips DNHD 120 for graphics.

When I set  this project as 25i I can see the outpout through analog Mojo, realtime downconwerted - result is not so bad but not excellent

But the problem starts here: If I want to transcode or mixdown the sequence from HD to sd e.g. MPEG 50, the result is awful, with jagged edges, blured image and flickering lines. So If I first export HD sequence as QT movie same as source and then reimport back as MPEG 50, then the result is very nice, clear and sharp image as I expect from HD SD software downconwerting.

Why transcode or mixdown don´t work for me well?

    Thanks

    M.

This is something many of us have observed too and there is no way out of this but Adrenaline with HD board or the DX I/O boxes; it is a software problem that perhaps Avid will never fix in order keep selling its hardware but it seems like You've found a nice workaround.

Re: HD to SD transcoding and mixdown problem

I am having the same issues with a project I am working on. I have a 40 minute nature documentary shot on HDV. The blu-ray version look spot on perfect, but when I go to export a quicktime ref into any mpeg encoder, (I have tried 4), the video has jaggies, especially on shots with tilts.

How did you export your quictime movie? Was it a reference file? I want to try the same.

    Thanks!

Re: HD to SD transcoding and mixdown problem

no it was not QT reference but QT movie, same as source.  Since odd errors occured with QT references compatibility in transcoders I better export QT movie

for best results I find that I must keep these rules

under render settings set the best quality

within HD projects do not mix HD and SD clips - especially titles - transcode SD or re create titles to DNXHD codec first

under media creation render settings do not select same as source - set it to DNXHD codec - if the application renders SD resolution under HD project it causes problems like jagged edges and blur after export

Promote titles to 3D and select High quality button

then export from HD project as QT movie same as source. If the QT movie is now reimported  to SD project as MPEG 50 or 1:1 the result looks nice. Exporting to mpeg encoder is the analogic way. Try to export movie as HD first, if you don´t have corresponding results or encoder does not support HD raster, then reimport QT movie to sd project as above and export to encoder again.

It is a little complicated way but for me it works

    good luck

    M.
