Xpress Pro 5.8 to Media composer upgrade question?

Apoligies if this has already been delt with on another part of the forum but i have had a look and i cant see it!

I recently purchased the MC3.1 upgrade box from an avid reseller but before i install it i have a few questions.

    1. I know that i need to uninstall all xpress pro modules before reinstalling MC but what about the project and media files located in the my documents/Avid media Files and OMFI Mediafiles folders? I have 2 projects that are attached to the OMFI media and 3 in the newer Avid media files folder? Will these files just be picked up by MC once the install is complete????

2.Because i purchased MC3.1 after the feb 1st date i relaise i can get the MC3.5 upgrade free of charge. Do i have to install MC3.1 first (including updating my dongle from Xpress pro first) or can i just go right for the 3.5 version.

3.Am i correct in thinking that i can continue to use the dongle with MC3.5 and not go to the new software regestation process? i much prefer the dongle idea?

    Many thanks

Yes. Don't uninstall your user, projects or Media and they will open fine in the new version. I recommend creating a new user after you upgrade though just to be safe.

You can go right to 3.5 if your hardware will support it.

Yes, currently, the dongles will be supported until 4.0 is released.

If I were you, I would back up the Avid Projects folder that you should find on your system drive.  Once you've installed Media Composer, just drop your project folders into the Avid Projects folder that MC installs.

You can leave the media files where they are and MC should see them with no trouble.

You can just go straight to 3.5.

Yes, you can keep using the dongle for now.  According to Avid, version 4 of MC will eliminate the dongle.

[edit] Tied with Todd.  Happily, we both gave the same answers. :)

    Hi All,

The installiation of MC3.5 went like a dream and it seems to work fine with the dongle option. Thanks for your help with the upgrade.

Only issue is that when i start the system i get a message stating that my virtual memory needs to be set at 2700MB and that im currently set to 2047MB. It asks to run Install3GB.exe to adjust these settings.

    Where is this file located????

    cheers

Forget my last post guys! Found the file, installed it, set the value to 2700 and no longer get the message.

The only difference is that i now get 2 options on boot up. one for windows XP and another for 'windows XP Avid 2700mb'. im guessing that is normal. I chose the Avid 2700 option and all works fine for now!

    cheers

Why the term "virtual memory" is used is beyond me. Virtual memory is supplied by the hard drive via disk caching. This message is concerning system memory, i.e. RAM.

I just don't understand how something as obviously misleading gets through. I wonder how many people familar with Windows went into the System tab in Control Pannel and started changiing around their virtual memory settings because of this message.

It is quite confusing when you first encounter it. I ran the exe file that it tells you to and now its ok. the dual boot option that resultrs from changing the value to 2700mb is the only real concerning part now. But saying that i have been choosing the 2700mb option and all is ok.

I just upgraded form Xpress to MC.  I am still getting that install3GBexe.  When I find it on my c drive I click on it and it saids unable to find boot.int.  Is there another way to increase the virtual memory.  I am also having my ultimate nightmare as my composer does not see my projects that I produced in xpress pro.  I can see the OMFI files on the Gdrive but MC does not open them up.  It digitizes good but I have not brought any HD in it yet.  I am  also getting a studder from the audio when I am playing a clip after around a minute.  Why cant anything be easy for Avid.

Do you mean MC doesn't see the projects themselves or that you can open the projects but all the media is offline?

Ok, don't panic. The folder for your projects was moved from the location where it was kept for the 'Pro software. Just do a search and you'll find them.

As for the Boot.int, This usually will happen if you didn't uninstall 'Pro first. Could this be possible? If so, try a complete uninstall again and reinstall and see if that clears it up?

Re: Xpress Pro 5.8 to Media composer upgrade question?

I used the one time call and Avid told me to unistall xpress pro and media composer.  unistall anything that is Avid so I did. I then put my dongle bak and the mojo and the composer loaded and works good except I still get that error message on the install3gig.exe.  So I followed the directions to the utilities and hit 3 gig and I only see one option now but it still saids boot.ini file: c:\boot.ini and nothing loads.  Also why cant I just open up a project in the composer menu and open a bin form my xpress pro files.  I looked everywhere for them, should they not just load up.  When the tech told me to get rid of anything Avid did I trash the project files.  I can still see all the OMFI on the two media drives but just cant open up in Composer.  I knew this was going to happen do you have any suggestions.  I look at the avid projects and it just had the test project I created a few minutes ago.  Can it be hiding anywhere-HELP!!!
