You are not forced to upgrade your systems if you don't want to.

when we bought 2.7 we got the promise from our reseller, that FULL XDCAM HD 422 will be available soon. then we upgraded to 3.0 with the same promise. now it seems to be real. if I want full support I HAVE TO UPGRADE AGAIN. AND BUY AGAIN.

I even don't want it for free. I just don't see why customers have to pay $ 290 twice and others not.

I have exactly the same XDCam problems that you have Moses. I lost a customer because of Avid's inability to deliver on its XDCam HD422 promise from October 8, 2008. Now it describes its XDCam HD422 support as "end-to-end". Hope so...

Moses, if your reseller promised a featue would be supported in any version of the software, would you let me know who that was? We can talk to them and, if it turns out you've been sold a bill of goods, I'm sure I could make a case to give you some help with the upgrade.

Hopefully they told you it would be coming soon. If that's the case then it was true and I would hope that you knew what was in each release before you bought it. If this is not the case and you feel that you were decieved, in any way, please contact me by email and Marianna and I will go to bat for you.

uh.... that was the promise from Avid - not just the reseller. to be fair: If we would have taken some time and would have read the small print we would have seen that writeback is not supported. we would have. for shure.

I wanted to stop but Avid today gives us one more reason to continue:

the german webshop got the price for the update:

do you remember? the US shop just wanted $ 295!

the same product - the same download. take any currency calculator and you'll see that 295 dollar equal 235 euros. the british shop charges 207 pounds - that's about € 232. afaik all prices include VAT. even if i exclude the german VAT (19%) the german netto price is €270.

why do the germans/austrians should pay € 100 more then the us and british customers? we don't get a translated software or MC help.

If I remember correctly the German price for the v3 update when it first came out was around €500, a 1:1 exchange rate at a time when the dollar was tanking. I had to buy it immediately. A week or two later it was around €100 cheaper. Could this happen again????

    Re: Media Composer 3.5 Released

Does anyone knows if this new version have a better support for RED Camera...do we have a direct import with TC attached from QuickTime???

I didn't see it anywhere in the READ ME file. I just lost a feature job that was shot on RED Camera. They decided to cut it on FCP because they can import the QuickTime wrapper straight into FTC while with Avid seems to be more difficult to work with.

As for the price is really strange and Avid isn't supportung us either.

A Sony EX1 costs 6000$ which in Greece should be 4800 Euros.

But the price is 6500 euros.

    295$ can't be 320 euros.

    Randall,

isn't already R3D files able to be converted through Metafuze?

    Re: Media Composer 3.5 Released

Wow.  Avid is really pushing this.  I don't know of any other company that acts this way and expects to keep their customers.  Avid seems to have the same philosophy on "New Thinking" and "Change" that the new president seems to have: Reel them in with rhetoric, then a few months later, spring the price on the loyal followers...

I agree with what has been said, someone who has been loyal and is a repeat customer should not be penalized for what is not a new product.  They can't call it 4.0 because they just put out a new release, yet they have to do something to keep the "Assurance" customers happy and let them feel that they are getting something out of it.  That is the reason for the price increase: they have created this system where the assurance customers are built into their budget and they can't lose them and can't afford to not have them.

I think putting this out as a pay update is disgraceful and speaks volumes for what kind of company they are and how they see their customers.

Now, is their a separate price for an educational upgrade, as their has been in the past?  Or has "New Thinking" done away with that...

I'm kind of curious about this as well - I have an educational license myself (which makes sense, seeing as how I teach it at a college), however the price of the upgrade is nearly the same as the price for a new copy under the educational program, which seems a bit odd.

Given the fact that 3.5 isn't really a radical leap from 3.1.2, I'll probably skip 3.5 and just buy a copy of 4.0 assuming the price stays the same.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Can I work on a project in the full version that was created in the trial version?

Yes but only in the current shipping version. While the trial version is fully functional bins will not open in older versions of the editor.

In you install the update trial, don't start a project you can't finish if you're not upgrading.  Sounds like bins won't be backwards compatible.  The way I read it is if you upgrade they will be, but not if you're just using the trial version.

That said, I can't wait to play with the trial tomorrow.

    Michael

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a quick question regarding this. If you have a current project on 3.05, and decide to try 3.5 with a fresh install downloaded because of an avid assurance contract, can you edit with 3.5 the current project started in 3.05? and if you wanted to uninstall 3.5 and install 3.12 would the same project still open in 3.12 even though you played a bit with it in 3.5?

basically if you have a current project, and use 3.5 can you downgrade to an earlier version and have no problems?

    thanks.

    Re: Media Composer 3.5 Released

Well, I when ahead and downloaded the trial after reading this, uninstalled 3.1.1 and installed 3.5 (backed up all my projects).  Open my projects in 3.5, make new media, played around, then rolled back.  So far everything is fine and the bins and everything haven't been effected.  I even made a new project in 3.5 and it's opening fine in 3.1.1.  I may have gotten lucky, but so far I haven't had any problems.

If you decide to go to 3.5, make sure you backup your projects first.  That way if you need to roll back you'll have them.
