    Deleting Media

At our news station, we have our Interplay system set up so that we have a project folder for each day.  Sometimes we have one piece of media located in multiple folders.  Sometimes there will be one in a folder with a reservation and another copy in a folder without one.  I was always under the impression that if the one from the folder without the reservation was deleted, then only the metadata would go away, and not the media, since the other copy is in a reserved folder.  However, when I do that, the media is deleted and the reserved clip goes offline.

I don't think that it's always done this, or maybe it only does it in certain situations?  Are we copying things around incorrectly?  I think usually we have the Interplay window open in Newscutter and drag a clip into a bin.  Sometimes I copy and paste files in Access (though not as often).  Basically this has made us very reluctant to delete things which is causing us to run the servers a little fuller than we would like...

You are correct on this. It is clearly stated in the Interplay Access User's guide. I cut this part for you.

I think the right procedure of copying a master clip from one folder to another is through Interplay Access (right click and paste) and not by dragging the clip into a bin on Interplay window of NC.

I'm curious about your problem, so I may replicate this on our system within the next day to see if it's the same.

Wich version of Interplay do you use? Before version 1.4. you could delete master clips and their media files from the orphan clips folder even if they were referenced by other avid assets in reserved folders.

    Re: Deleting Media

What you pasted from the user guide is exactly how I thought it was supposed to work.  One clarification to my first post (I'm not sure if this was clear the first time...):  When I said that we make copies of clips in Newscutter, I meant that sometimes reporters or editors would drag a clip from the Interplay window into the bin for easier use, so they don't have to keep the Interplay window open (we're working with only one monitor, so our screen space is very limited...).  I thought that was something that was allowed (in fact I almost specifically remember it from our Avid training class...).  Is that not the case?

Thanks for your help on this!  The sooner we get it figured out, the better.  I'm deleting other people's saved files which is NEVER good.

    Re: Deleting Media

I'm actually on vacation (which might make me kind of lame for thinking about work and posting on this, but whatever), so I'll have to get you my Interplay version in a few days.

However, this isn't happening when I delete Orphan Clips... It's regular projects.  Does that help at all?

    Thanks for your help!!

You're doing it correctly. But how do you create copies of master clip/s before letting the editors use the media, do you copy the master clip from one folder and paste it to another folder? By doing this the system creates a copy of the link, so deleting the first link won't have any effect on the second link (most especially if the clip is reserved).

We don't generally make copies before letting editors use the media.  We're a smaller TV station, so individual editors capture/import their own media, and then others use it as they see necessary.

I can think of a couple specific times when we have had the mysterious deletion problem.  The first set of copies were definitely done by dragging a clip from the Interplay Window to a Newscutter bin.  The second time, I think I did use Access and made a copy of the master clip and copied it from one folder and pasted it into another (reserved) folder.  Actually wait, here's a question:  Is there a difference between the "master clips" and a clip that is in a folder?  Regardless, I think that when I copied the clips that ended up getting deleted, I was copying the original location of where it was ingested, but I'm not entirely sure because I was moving something that was someone else's.

    Re: Deleting Media

    sthacker:
The first set of copies were definitely done by dragging a clip from the Interplay Window to a Newscutter bin.

When you do this you're making a local copy (of metadata) of whatever you drag or check out from interplay folder to NC bin. The associated/related media can be deleted by purging either the one in the Interplay folder or the one on your local bin. If you delete from Interplay window the metadata or the link will be gone as well as the media seated in your storage (if it is not reserved and if you have delete permission) and the metadata in your local bin is still there but it'll show offline. This can be done vice-versa. If the material is reserved (in Access) and you want it to purge from Interplay (reserved) bin the deletion will not push through, so the metadata and media will not be deleted. But when you delete from NC bin only the metadata will be deleted and a message will prompt informing you that "0" media is deleted.

    sthacker:
second time, I think I did use Access and made a copy of the master clip and copied it from one folder and pasted it into another (reserved) folder.

On this situation, if an editor checks out something from Interplay (unreserved) bin to his NC bin and deletes the copies on the local and Interplay (unreserved) bin, only the metadata or the links from the said bins will be gone because a separate and reserved link or metadata is located in another folder. If an editor checks out something from a reserved folder, only the metadata will be deleted when he deletes his copy from his NC bin.

    sthacker:
Is there a difference between the "master clips" and a clip that is in a folder?

Can you please elaborate it because it's not clear to me? Well, master clips are clips...these are the ingested/imported materials and subclips (which are metadata) will be created and are linked to master clip when you subdivide them by marking In & Out. Did  I answer your question or I misinterpret it?
