    720p JVC Footage workflow

Current acquisition set up:  JVC HD100 camera shooting HDV 24p, DRHD100 hard disk recorder recording QT HD files

Workflow into avid:  w/ Cineform, rip .m2t files from DRHD100 QT files (real time capture), import resulitng .m2t files into MC3 23.976 720p project and cut

My question:  is there a way to get these .m2t files from the hard disk recorder (or tape for that matter) w/ the pull down in them so i can cut in a 29.97 project (and still have my 24p look)?  The .m2t's that the hard disk recorder captures have the sync problem that you get when you import/digitize straight from JVC equipment (i have the camera or BRHD50 deck to choose from).

    Thanks for any suggestions.

(On a side note, pretty dissapointing that Avid hasn't fixed this.)

    Re: 720p JVC Footage workflow

After years of pressuring them and even being involved with some beta testing along the way, I've pretty much given up on Avid supporting JVC HDV with any reliability.

I'm capturing externally and transcoding to DNxHD before fast importing into MC. It's a pain in the ***, but at least I get to edit the lovely footage my HD100 shoots.

    swil-

what are you using to capture externally and are you able to import the 24p footage w/ the pulldown for edit in a 30i project?  what codec is used and comparitivly, what are the file sizes (HDV to your codec).

my goal:  i've been shooting/archiving footage for several clients w/ this in DV 24p for several years.  I'd love to be able to combine the two types of footage in the same project.  while one is dv and the other hdv, this should be possible if i can get the HDV footage out of the camera w/ the pulldown.

    thanks for the help.

I thought ALL DV footage was 29.97 with a pulldown if you wanted 23.978fps.

    Re: 720p JVC Footage workflow

I'm shooting HDV 24p.  when i rip the .m2ts from the QT files shot on the firestore, the resulting files are 23.976 - no pulldown.  I hope i've got my terminolgy right here.

If i shot directly to m2t on the firestore and import those files directly into avid, i deal w/ the same sync issues that you do if you digitize a tape of this format in via 1394.  When shooting, if i capture the files to the firestore in it's QT codec, i can then play them back (firewire in to PC out the firestore) and have Cineform 'rip' the .m2t files from the QT files.  The .m2t. files that Cineform pulls from the QT files import fine into Avid.

It all sounds rather confusing but i do this so i can archchive files that aren't huge and that will import into avid.  Again my problem is the m2t files that come out of cineform are 23.976 - a pain to use w/ any other frame rate.  i've tried brining in the files off the firestore directly to the cineform codec w/ added pulldown, but have never gotten usable results.  Also, given the Cineform codec, the resulting files are huge and i don't want to archive files of that size.
