Hi
I'm about to start a new job. Documentary, lots of material, shot with EX3.
I want the director to log the material on location and wonder what the correct workflow would be.
Just downloaded the latest MCA 3.0.5 software and checked out the helpfile of Medialog, but XDCAM EX is not mentioned.
Is it possible for the director to preview and log the material (arrange it in bins) on his Windows-Laptop before it gets imported into my MCA?
It would also be very helpful to use a feature similar to the Script-view to translate the interviews as it is all in russian.
Thx for ur ideas!

EX footage needs to be re-wrapped for the Avid using the Clip Borwser application from Sony before it can be viewed in the Avid.
I haven't done a lot of work witht he Clip Browser but I do knwo that you can do selections there before doing the export for Avid so that may be a solution for you.

unfortunately, nothing but the file itself arrives in my MCA3.0.5 from the sony clip browser. it seems to be impossible to log EX-files. I hoped that the feature "import essence marks as locators" at the import settings tab->xdcam would work, but appearently its not for ex files, that are §essence marked" in the clipbrowser. its a real pitty! m
Sorry, I thought I read that you could pick and choose what portions fo the media to mark and re-wrap while in the Clip Browser app itself. Is that not the case?

You can indeed define sub-clips for import using the PDZ-1 XDCAM clip browser. We do it here on a regular basis.

the pdz-1 doesn't work on xdcam ex media as far as I know- there is a xdcam ex clip browser for viewing and marking the clips-I don't think you can create sublips, but you can "create new clip using in/out selection"-I think that actually creates a new piece of media.from xdcam ex clip browser you can export as mxf for import into avid-also creates a new piece of media. I haven't used the xdcam ex clip browser direct to the camera-I copy the files to a hard drive and do my viewing/exporting from there.
However, I should also point out that you cannot "batch import" a sub-clip, it will import the entire clip. I believe this issue is being looked into and addressed by Sony. Hopefully, there will be a resolution soon.

For the EX cameras, you use Sony Clipbrowser, not PDZ. The producer can do selects and mark an in and an out, then select "new clip using in/out section(n)" If your clip was named bob101, the new clips would be bob101(1) bob101(2) etc. Then the producer can export mxf files of the selects. These new clips can be batch imported into MC.
Another part of my workflow with the EX-1 is that I set timecode to time of day, and set my viewfinder data to duration. During the shoot, the producer can make notes, refering to their watch for timecode (and never has to ask me or squint at a monitor with TC display). Meanwhile in my finder I'm seeing how long we've been on his shot. Very efficient.

yup, i also found out that with the "export as avid aaf" option in sony clipbrowser 2.0.1 the "descriptions" arrive in the appropriate avid column. but as bobrusso wrote in his blog:
The downside is that the media can't be recreated and relinked to the sequence from the original cards if it is deleted.
Still this is no solution to my task. We need a workflow to log the clips every evening after shooting on location. that includes to give names, organize in bins, use the "essence marks to locators" feature from the import settings->xdcam tab.
will stick to the "export for NLE" method BobRusso describes in his first blog, as it is the most robust workflow regarding batch-import.
