After installing 3.0.5, restarting, then starting MC, all seemed to be starting up fine. Until I got the message above. MC quits. There is a reference in the Knowledgebase,
"Trashed Media DataBases (msmMac.pmr and msmOMFI.mdb ) located in Avid MediaFiles in the Supported Files Folder of the Media Composer Software Folder."
I can't tell what this means: there is no Supported Files Folder in the MC folder.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
This refers to rebuilding the media database files. On each media drive, there is an "Avid MediaFiles" folder and sometimes an "OMFI MediaFiles" folder at the root level of the drive. In each numerical folder inside the MXF folder inside the Avid MediaFiles folder, delete the two files that identify by type as "MSM Media Database". If you have an OMFI MediaFiles folder, delete the same two files. On re-launch, the system will detect the missing files and build new ones at the "Initializing Media Streams Manager" stage.

I discovered a larger issue: I'd been trying to install 3.0.5 from the desktop where it had downloaded. I ran 'Launch', and got an error when trying to install the Suite. I was able to install just Media Composer, but got the Exception error when trying to start it up.
The solution that solved all problems was to burn the downloaded 3.0.5 files to a DVD, and run 'Launch' from the DVD. The Suite installed with no errors, and the application ran correctly without the above error.
Thanks for the help.
Harry,
There is a known resource conflict between MC 3.x and ProTools that results in malfunction of audio suite inside Media Composer. If you do have ProTools on your platform and this issue surfaces, remove it. Just FYI.
Larry,
that is not entirely correct. PRo Tools an MC 3.0.5 can exist on the same system (as mentioned on the digidesign website) I am having both on the same machine for a long (and several versions back) time without any problems. I also did not experience any installing errors whatsoever. The conflicts you are hinting at are individual cases, with a couple of different problems/solutions.

Done that and nothing. I got the same exception error! :(
Reposting here incase it helps someone.
Found the solution.
Went to Public>Public Documents and Deleted EVERYTHING there.
Only then MC starts normal and recreates users and site settings.
You will need the installation disc or folder.
Proceed with your own risk and back up whatever needed:
Attic Folder and User Settings at least.

I had the same problem on my MC 3.1 system this morning. I found and deleted database files from here: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Avid Media Composer\Avid_MediaFiles (on Windows XP)
It worked!!! ...and I didn't have to delete ANYTHING else!
It Worked!
ksmith0034,thanks!

For the benefit of anyone running Avid on a mac and arriving at this thread via a search, more or less the exact same technique works there too.
In my case the file was in the following folder:
Macintosh HD/Applications/Avid Media Composer/Supporting Files/Avid_MediaFiles
... which I found by running a search for 'msm'.
Just a note about rebuilding MSM Media Database Files.
These are the circumstances that indicate a rebuild is necessary:
1) You encounter media offline issues when you KNOW for sure that the associated media files are still on the system.
2) You launch the media tool and the resulting bin comes up dead empty.
3) You move a project and it's media from one stand alone platform to another.
Rebuilding databases is NOT something you should do as routine preventative maintenance. Do it only when you need to.
Brilliant! Worked for me on a Mac Pro.
Hi, On VISTA, I had to do the following to get rid of that error:
Mouse drive C:, and select USERS, and work your way to Public Docs and delete the
Media Media Files folder.
That fixed it !

Thank you for the idea. This is what helped me in MC 3.5.1. I got the same error message. Deleted index files on all media disks - no effect. Then discovered media directory in \Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Avid Media Composer\Avid_MediaFiles Deleted index files (msmFMID.pmr, msmMMOB.mdb)
... and it worked!
Stanislav:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Avid Media Composer\Avid_MediaFiles Deleted index files (msmFMID.pmr, msmMMOB.mdb)
I just want to point out to the community that the above highlighted folder does NOT contain associated media files. It contains files necessary for the UI itself to run correctly, so it is normal for that particular folder with the underscore in the name to live on the C: drive. Not to be confused with "Avid MediaFiles" folders which contain associated media files and should always live on separate media drives.
