Hi
I have been using MC 3.00 on my mac book pro and mac pro. I have ingested all kinds of footage, DV, HDV etc. Recently I got asked to offline a DigiBeta project so I bought an SDI mojo secondhand and hired a Sony J30. Having been converted from Final Cut to avid within the last year I was absolutely shocked to find that the mojo has no deck control. Unbelievable. So then I worried about timecode and how exactly I was going to get the tape timecode into my Avid. I have searched far and wide and so far have not found a decent answer to the following question. How do I capture SDI video with timecode using a mojo SDI? I need exact steps here, do I need some other piece of tech or is it simply a configuration issue. Somebody please help.
Thanks
Deck control is a simple matter of a keyspan USB to serial adapter.

Thanks very much for the tip, but how does avid know when you have this connected? Is there any option I have to click?

Avid will see it as a serial port thus allowing you to use it in the Deck Configuration window as a Direct channel.

I too am curious about this. Will the AVID MC detect the timecode on SDI feed via the Mojo SDI?

No.
No, timecode comes in through the RS422 link (via the keyspan adapter) if you are capturing from SDI, or through firewire if you are capturing via firewire. The VITC is not used as the timecode reference.

I just rented a J-30 for some offline capturing of BetaSP - though I'm using the S-video and RCA audio into my Analog Mojo. (I'll upres later using NitrisDX and SDI or Component).
I believe I have everything set up correctly, except I have no Deck Control. I have the Keyspan USA28xB and my Mac and my Avid see it. I can go into Deck Config and choose Direct on USA28x... as the Channel, but Auto-Config (or manual config) does nothing - No Deck.
The Keyspan is connected directly into the 9-Pin 422 on the J-30 and according to the Qualified Device Guide - that is correct (says: "Must use RS-422 direct control").
Any help?

From what I remember about the J30, it needs special software to be operated remotely (JZ-1) section 4-4 of the manual; check with your rental company.
If it has been loaded, then perhaps the remote is set to firewire control, and not rs 4.2.2, but I'm not sure how to check this
Hope this helps

Wow. I wish I had known about the TrippLite USB > serial adapter back when we were capturing on the project I'm currently working on. It always made me really nervous to be on a film project and dealing with timecode over firewire. I have a Mojo DX now with an RS422 port so it doesn't really apply any more, but that little adapter is a great think to know about.
Once again, thanks BLKDOG :o)
That was actually Kenton
Hey Swatchpost, does the RS422 on the Mojo DX actually work? I've been looking for someone to give me a definante answer on that.
Yes, absolutely. I've captured from a SONY DSR-1500 SDI as well as your generic D-BETA deck SDI as well using the RS422 deck control both times. Works exactly like any other Avid BOB. Have you heard differently?
I just know that when the DX was first advertised, they were saying the serial port was for service use. But it's good to know that it works for deck control/timecode. Thanks

Interesting, I scoured the manual last night, but didn't see anything about a software for remote operation. There was a whole section devoted to using the Remote "Commander" (ie, remote control)
I was looking for some kind of flip switch to enable 422 remote, but didn't see that either. The rental house has given me two more Keyspans and another 422 cable to try out - thinking that maybe I have a faulty one.
I'll look into the software thing though.
Thanks!
