I have received my first project shot on the Red. The client has dropped off a drive full of .r3d files, and I'm trying to figure out my next steps. My plan is to finnish on Symphony, although, I might move over to DS for the last touches.
Assuming I stay on the Symphony platform, which Red apps do I need to use to ingest the .r3d files? Is it as simple as exporting Quicktime Reference files from Red Cine, and importing into Symphony?
I imagine this question has been answered several times. If so, just point me in the right direction.
Thanks,
-Jd
If you search here for "Red", you will get a lot of threads discussing this.
Here's one to start with.

Here's my suggested RED/Avid Symphony finish workflow today.
0. Get a Mac to process the QuickTime files. There isn't a RED QT Codec for Windows.1. Using REDrushed the first step is to select the folder with the all the original R3Dfiles. Click the “Add Files” button and select the folder with the R3Dfiles. It will also go through all the subfolders. All R3D files will appearin the main window.2. Next select the output folder for the QT reference files and the ALEfile. File > Select Output folder.3. Select directory where ALE file should go. I suggest putting both theALE and the resulting QT ref files into the same folder.4. Select Avid compatible audio. This creates 24bit audio as expected byMedia Composer from the 32bit audio and No Resolution EXT (_H, _F, etc.)QT Wrappers > OptionsSelect type of QT ref proxy you want created. For example, M is fine foroffline work using DNxHD 36.5. Go to File Menu and select “export ALE”. Select the directory with the QTreference files.6. The folder will now contain the ALE file and all the QuickTime referencefiles for the selected R3D files. These are now ready for import into a Mac based Avid or saved as an Avid DNxHD QT file using QT Pro, MPEG Streamclip or the like. Import the ALE into a bin and Batch Import the QuickTime files. For a Media Composer/Symphony on-line a higher quality QT Reference can becreated, either at first or after the fact, and batch imported into the Avidusing a finishing DNxHD codec.

Bob,
Thank you for the response. It's difficult to tell on the Red site what the exact difference is between Red Alert and Red Cine. -And RedRushes doesn't even show up on their list (it downloads with Red Alert). -So your post was very helpful.
Thanks.
Okay, maybe I'm doing this wrong.
1. I opened up REDrushes and added a .r3d file. It shows up in the list.
2. After setting the output folder (file>select output folder), and switching the audio option to Avid compatible (QT Wrappers>Options), I exported the ALE (file>export ALE).
3. Result: My output folder only contains the ALE. But there are no QT reference files.
Is REDrushes supposed to generate a QT reference? Or does it just make ALEs?
Thanks for the help again.
Under QuickTime Wrappers make a selection on the type of QT Ref file you'd like to create.
I selected Make Med/Qtr (M) under the QT Wrapper but nothing happens. I assume this is the part where it generates a list of reference files... but no files appear in my destination folder. Any ideas?
some gold for you...
Take all spaces out of all folder, dir and drive names..
hope that helps
Michael
Do you have clips selected? Take a look at the info here:
http://www.avid.com/red/
Michael16oz:Take all spaces out of all folder, dir and drive names..
have you done this?
to clarify redline and redrushes (at the moment) will not accept path names with spaces.
