    for FCP export?

    Hi

What codec (and levels) should I use to give a FCP user some media..

I've spent a day f****ing about trying to give over some short promos and it 'always' looks ***.

It seems I must translate 16,235 to 0,255. Is there no way for FCP to map correctly? If so what codec out of Avid works..

They use balckmagic hardware is it safe to install their codex on my system?

    regards

    Michael

PS  is FCP prone to banding?

    Re: for FCP export?

Apple just made their pro-res codec available on their website. I would download them and export using that.

FCP does have 10 bit ingest capability so banding should be minimal.

    Thanks for replying

I read the Pro Rez is read only on PC?

Also is there a dithering plugin for Avid so I can mix down through it to 8bit then export? I use a great free one with DF but to do it on the Avid will help my people who get confused with DF.

    regards

Unfortunately another problem is that Avid wouldn't write 10bits into another type of QuickTime (can't read them either). Looks like more SR hire costs!

I believe that Avid should extend there good universal (tape based) options to a NEW export render module (look at the new smoke features)

    Should have:

Frame rate conversion options (all the usual features)
Frame size options (better and fuller scaling options)
Colour space and bit depth options (please dithering!!!)
other filtering options? (to help with encoding?)

This is rapidly heading to a tapless world... !

At the moment my option is to:
    Output 16bit Tiffs
Dither these encode them to a 8bit codec in DF
    Output a wav
    Join these in procoder.

This can't be the only way???

Squeeze 5 does not take 10bit (nor does procoder) If it could I could make the banding the other guys problem by staying 10bit
Avid will not output 10bit in a way that FCP can read?

    kind ranting regards

PS I havn't even mentioned level and gama weirdness.

PSS what do other people do... 1. Tape only 2. fudge through

    Should have:

Add, metadata tracking. It's ridiculous in this day and age that Avid can't read TC in a QT file.

QT and FCP do enough of that all on their own. Watch the FCP lists and you'll see a lot of complaining about color shifts. You can take a clip, send it to Color, do nothing to it. render it out and come back to FCP, and it won't match the original.

What we do? We actually will play out of Avid and capture in FCP. Do that a lot. Even make QTs with window burns (RT in Kona) that way as it's faster than rendering one out in Avid.

    Hi

I recommend meta-cheater for getting meta data from Quicktimes to Avid.

Hope that helps while we wait!

PS I find it strange that I can start tapeless end up tapeless but I must use tape to move things around.

We use Meta-Cheater, but it is still a painful workaround. And exactly how do you export with metadata using Meta-Cheater?
