Hi guys,
I'm new to the MC 3.0 world, but have been with Avid forever.
I installed my new software on an OctoCore Mac Pro. Works fine with SD stuff off of a Firewire deck. But when I'm in an HD project (P-2 based MFX, 720p/30pn) I have to unplug the deck or the sequence won't play in the edit monitors. Fair enough, although FCP will play a really crappy down conversion thru FireWire.
What I'm wondering is if I spring for a DVCPRO HD deck, hooked up to Firewire, will it play the HD material through firewire now… and let me monitor an HD signal from the deck?
What about some of the other Firewire "solutions" out there… like the motu v4HD box?
All I REALLY need to do is be able to pipe an HD HDMI signal to a flat panel monitor. I mainly offline now, so a full blown Nitris is not a necessity… or an option. BlackMagic offers their intensity card for FCP for under $300 and it works… sorta (it is FCP after all).
Note to Avid: You'll sell a bunch of cards in the sub $1,000 price range if they'll do this one little thing!
FYI, love the new 3.0. I think I'll finally retire the MC 9000!
Thanks for any insight.

To my knowledge, the deck will only pass thru DVCProHD, not any DNX resolutions. Since Avid has those locked up, only their boxes will decode it. (and ironically, their boxes won't play back DVCProHD out of the SDI port)
For cheap rigs, we've been setting up a 3rd computer monitor and using full screen playback. Be careful of your resolution settings and refresh rate, but it can look ok and is the least expensive setup.
In the end, "cheap hd" doesn't actually exist in most cases unless you don't ever need to hand the hd off to any hardware or see it on a broadcast monitor. The hardware is still pretty expensive.
Don't trust the internet...

If you can afford a DVCProHD deck around $23K for inferior Firewire monitoring, why isn't a Nitris around $12K an option? If all you want to do is monitor HD, then your cheapest Avid solution is a Mojo DX.
I fuly agree with you on a cheap monitoring solution from Avid. I expect we'll see one in about three years, after FCP has fully taken over.
Avid talks a good game about listening to customers, but they're not quick on the follow-up. This very situation is pushing housands of editors to FCP for HD work.
Can the Nitris DX / Mojo DX monitor DVCPRO HD to a HD monitor? Or is it only DNXHD resolution?
