So, I've been trying to get windows to recognize my camera for about two days.
I've tried hooking up my Panasonic HVX200, and then an XL1S
When I plug it in, it'll run through the new hardware wizard but then fail to install it properly. It'll show up in the device manager but with a question mark by it, signifying that it is not functioning properly.
I'm using the SIIG 800 3 port firewire card.
I'm on service pack 2 right now. I haven't been able to find a lot of information on service pack 3 in regards to Avid.
I've been digging around in the knowledge base and downloaded this fix to see if it made a difference:

I'm kind of running out of ideas. Any help would be appreciated.

This really isn't an Avid issue, it's a Panasonic driver issue. Unfortunately, from what I remember of the Panasonic website, though, your chances of getting useful help over there are small to nil. One suggestion though. Try installing the Panasonic drivers first, then connect your camera. I know that it seems backward, but as I recall that's what we had to do.
no, no. I've been down that road. Panasonic was actually very helpful when I called them. There are no drivers for DV cameras. Windows should just recognize it. Like I said, I've tried hooking up multiple cameras. It's not just the panasonic that's not being recognized.
I do realize that this is not an Avid program though. It's more of a Windows issue. I was just hoping someone would have some experience with this issue.
Try deleting the firewire host controller in device manager and allowing Windows to re-install it. Has helped me in the past when a camera / deck hasn't been recognised.

We have problems like this now and then. I have yet to find any solution for it that is clearly "the" solution. Usually some combination of removing and reinstalling the FW card (and any drivers if it asks for them), and reinstalling avid a few times helps. Another thing is to see if the the camera is being recognized by other computers as a device at all so you can isolate where the issue is. Changing cables helps too. Its not like the cables go bad, it just seems to be a very finicky undependable system. This kind of nonsense has plagued AVIDs for years and i am surprised that with the 20 different devices we hook up to our computers be they scanners, printers, network servers, drives etc etc etc... the ONE thing that seems to be a guaranteed mess is AVID's ability to see cameras/decks. People love to defend AVID about this. Reminds me of people who think Sarah Palin is a qualified anything.
I think we need a few more digital HD formats
The camera is not being recognised correctly by Windows, and it's somehow Avid's problem? Interesting.
Okay, finally got it fixed!!!
I uninstalled the 1394 controller from the device manager, turned off the computer, took the card out (just for good measure) put the card back in, turned on the machine, Windows automatically reinstalled the card and everything is working as it should!
Again, this was never an Avid issue, just a screwy PC.
Thanks guys!
in case it helps for future I've had a similar problem with an older sony camera. There's a way of reverting to the windows XP 1394 driver from sp1 which sorted mine out - can't remember it well enough to detail it here, but effectively you use the hardware wizard to manually 'update' the driver, then point it at the old cabs for pre sp2, then theres a rename you do to stop windows from re-updating on reboot...
If your problem isn't totally fixed, give this a try its completely reversible!
if it moves and it shouldn't use Gaffa, if it should move and it doesn't, use WD40!
