    Partioned Raid Drives crash

I posted back in July about problems I was having with my SCSI raid with MC 3.0.1 on Tiger, but didn't get much interest. But investigations have shone light on the possible problem, so here goes again:

When using my 4TB partitioned SCSI RAID I would get "bus errors on main thread...." crashes if I attempted to change the capture settings from a single disk to the new group that was my partioned raid. The system would also crash if I placed my media creation settings in the Site Settings File closed the project and attempted to open a new or any other project.

I went back to working with an older smaller RAID which was not partitioned and the problems went away. Recently I moved to a new esata set up with G-Tech 2 x 4TB units. I striped these as a single RAID 0 for best performance and then partitioned it into 8 partions using the Apple disk utility. Wham all my bus errors came back!

So I'm guessing that the problem isn't with the raids, the SCSI or eSata cards but the basic fact that the RAIDS are partioned. Perhaps I shouldn't be using Apple's disk utility to partition? What's everyone else using? I've always believed that's its healthy to partition such big drives, (4TB,8TB) but perhaps with the new software that's not so important. As a test I'm going to return the original 4TB SCSI RAID to a single partition and see if that works as it didn't in its partitioned state.

Anyone else been over this ground? I can't be the only one with such raid problems. Anyone thoughts or insights will be much appreciated.

    Re: Partioned Raid Drives crash

Not a total techy, but from what I know there isn't a need to partition raids. No?

    Re: Partitioned Raid Drives crash

Oh I wish that was the answer, Kelly, do you run your 6TB RAID as a single partition? In the past I've always partitioned large RAIDS into smaller partitions to prevent the Avid databases corrupting over time.

On MC 2.8 I had no problem with a 3TB RAID on a G5 partitioned into 6 partitions to keep them under 500GB. But moving up to a Mac Pro and MC 3.0.1 was when all my problems started. Anyone else running MC 3.0.1 on Tiger on Mac Pros successfully with partitioned RAIDS? Thanks.

    Re: Partitioned Raid Drives crash

I returned the original problematic 4 TB RAID to a single partition and all my bus error crashes went away. So I guess I go forward with single partitioned RAIDs until a future MC upgrade allows me to partition without these crashes.
