I know this can be done because Avid Xpress Pro Studio includes Pro Tools LE.
But how is it done? I've read numerous times that Pro Tools and Avid can't reside on the same system. Do I need to use two separate computers and share the media file?
Essentially, I'd like to do more sound post work than Avid allows, so I'm looking at getting some version of Pro Tools for the more involved sound work. I won't be recording with Pro Tools, only editing.
Some have reported success with both on one machine but I suspect far more people do not succeed.
My experience sugests that the two current versions (MC3 and Protools 7.4) are the least compatible combination of any in recent years when it comes to cohabiting on one CPU. (not dual boot)
Here I have PC Avid and Mac Protools networked and that is a very successful combo. I also have the Mac setup as dual boot with MC 3 on one and 7.4 on the other boot. It takes about 2 minutes to switch between them. Its an ok ish arrangement.
Andrew,
Does Pro Tools at all understand the audio editing done in MC3? For example, if I use keyframes in MC3 to selectively change gain, does Pro Tools see them?
And conversely, do edits made in Pro Tools need to be rendered inorder for them to have an affect on the in MC3 project? And if they do need to be rendered, how are the rendered files used in MC3. (I'm assuming rendering in Pro Tools creates a new media file and does not change the actual source file.)
Thanks much.

A simple question...
If it's networked, how do you have your drives configured?
Or did you just export a small QT to view in Pro Tools then render audio to bring back into MC?
Can you give us little more info on your workflow and setup please....
Thank you so much :)

Drives are local to each machine with specific folders Shared for moving files back and forth
I export an audio only timeline as an AAF and the video as a video only DV Quicktime. (As I am not using Mojo with Protools for me that Quicktime must not use the Avid codec)
Mix and export interleaved stereo file back to Avid.
PM me if you want more detail.

I've used Avid Xpress Pro HD and Pro Tools on the same computer for about 2 years with no problem and taking a project from the Avid to Pro Tools was very smooth. However I've just upgraded to MC 3.0 so I'm hoping it stays as smooth...
same here,. using both programs on the same computer for a few years. No problems after some changes like installing pt after mc. Running MC 3 and PT7.4

Have you now got this combination up and running successfully without any issues?
We are just about to invest in pro tools LE 7.4 with an mbox mini (with free upgrade to PT 8 when it comes out) so I'd be interested to know before we go ahead that can safely install on the same PC as MC 3
The Digidesign site seems to suggest that they will actually work together with the mbox series - although not the 002 or 003...
Thanks in advance
John
John,
Both running (not at the same time of course) without any problem on the same machine. Using the old MBox. Also using DV Toolkit 2.0. I never do audio in Avid.
Looking forward to Protools 8. It's compatability with Decklink HD Extreme card looks promising for the future.
Maybe Digi will loose the code that identifies anything MXF or OMF (QT ref movies, QT DV movies using Avid codec, etc) as Avid video then subsequently refuses to play them unless Protools finds a Mojo attached.
