When I resize an animation w/a matte key it resizes the video layer below as well. How can I isolate the resize to only effect the animation?
Is this a seperate Matte key with an independant Fill/alpha layer or is it a RT matte key with a nested fill/alpha?
If it's the latter, just click the "Promote to 3D" button in the bottom-right hand corner of the effect editor and yo uwill have the parameters to move the key.

Are you adding a resize effect to your matte?

If you are, there is no need to. As BLKDOG said, just promote the matte effect to 3D and you'll have all the resizing, repositioning and rotation options you could want. And it will not effect the layer underneath.

when I promote to 3D and reposition it still moves the image below. Is there some particular tool other than postion I should be using?
In order to help you Red, you have to tell us exactly what type of Matte key you are using. IS this a three layer key (background, Fill, Alpha) or a two layer key (Background/RT Matte key)?
Then, as BLKDOG pointed out, it's probably not a realtime matte key with it's own alpha channel. If not, you could export the fill layer of your graphic, take it into Photoshop and create an alpha channel, and then bring it back in as a RT matte.
I'm getting the message RT matte key and RGB are limited to two layers when I step in so it must be a RT matte. when I promote to 3d and reposition the alpha and V1 move but not the animation!
Well, that's really strange, because as I write this, I have an RT matte key graphic promoted to 3D and both the fill and the alpha move without affecting the background on V1. You might want to try a new user profile and see if the problem persists. If it does, rebuild the site settings files, they may have become corrupted.
OK. digging deeper it looks like alpha was imported wrong so the other guy on this project swaped sources in the matte key. For some reason this effects the position parameter. I'll just reimport. Thanks all.
Good. I knew it had to be some kind of operational error, but didn't want to make any "accusations". Lord knows, we have enough of that going on in the political world, we don't need it here!
Larry & group,
I use a lot of .PNG graphics I make in Photoshop, are those alpha's RT? I've haven't tried promoting them as suggested, but I have the same problem Red did when I try to move them. As mattes they look great, what import settings should a .PNG file be set for?
Thanks...

Yes, alpha channels made in photoshop are RT mattes when imported into Avid. The import options should be aspect ratio = 601, color levels = RGB, File field order = non-interlaced, and "invert" for alpha channel. If after importing, the matte key clip looks totally black, try "use existing" for the alpha option. But it definitely comes into the Avid as an RT matte and you should be able to promote it and move around without affecting lower layers. I do it all the time.
