Hi there,
I need to incorporate some shots I got a few months ago, with my old mini-DV camera (60i, I think), into my current Avid 1080/24p project (all the other visuals are from my Sony EX-1).
Yesterday, when I connected my mini-DV camera, and launched the Capture Tool, I got the error message saying I can't bring 60i stuff into a 24p project. I'd been made aware of this issue in past exchanges on this forum, so (even though I'd forgotten about it) I wasn't surprised. But is there something I can do to get this stuff into this project?
BLKDOG once said that he was able to bring 30fps stuff into (I presume) a 24p project by recapturing "with a pulldown". Is this something I can do?
I've already tried to take the shots I need - - which by the way I'd edited some months ago in a 60i Avid project (in AXP) - - and export them as QuickTime, and then import them into my current 24p project. Some of the shots weren't bad, but all the shots I'd sped up look horrible... and some of these shots are the very ones I need to use.
Here's one idea: should I recapture the shots I need (particularly the shots I need to speed up) in a new 60i project (in Media Composer), and then, without speeding anything up, export them as QuickTime files... and then import them into my 24p project?
Will these shots then look better, and behave when I speed them up? Or do they need to have their frame-rate messed with first? And if I do need to change the frame-rate, with a pull-down or whatever... what's the best way to do this?
Thanks as always for any advice, Malcolm
The EX1 doesn't shoot 24p so I assume you mean 23.976p. You should be able to capture the NTSC video via firewire into a 23.976 NTSC project. The 3:2 will be removed on the fly so it will look jerky and most likely not acceptable unless it was shot with frame segmentation to give it a film look. You might need to make a selection the Film/24p settings to get this to work.
You could try Micheal's trick: <http://www.24p.com/conversion.htm>
The best method is to use DVFilm's Maker software to remove the 3:2. <http://www.dvfilm.com/maker/>

Hi Bob,
Thanks for getting back to me. Just to be clear (my original post was perhaps overly complicated; my EX-1 does claim to shoot 24p, but you're right, my Avid project is 23.976p), the stuff I'm having issues with, re bringing it into my current Avid project, is some old footage I shot on my old mini-DV camera.
All the stuff I've shot on my EX-1 is fine. 24p into 23.976 works nicely.
But the stuff I shot on my mini-DV is 60i (I'm pretty sure), and it won't capture.
Is this what you understood from my first post, when you suggested I try DVFilm Maker?
If so, I'll give it a try.
Thanks, Malcolm
I believe I understood your question correctly. While the camera might have a 24p mode, it is really creating a 23.976 clip. If you look in the manual for the EX camera lists the 24p mode as recording 23.98. This is different from 24p and wouldn't work in that project type in the Avid. This is all I was pointing out.
If you want to convert SD Mini-DV clips to 23.976 you can try Michael Phillips trick:

DVFilm's Maker application is specifically designed to do this.
Thanks for this, Bob. I'll give it a try.
Malcolm
