render for a screening for quality

I have a long form project shot in miniDV with lots of fx, and of course titles.  I have a layer on top of entire show for color correction.

On other threads I have seen statements that you can render just the top layer in 1:1 or DV50 and get better results.  I'll be making a DVD and projecting this on a 7 foot wide screen.

In the same vein, for maximum quality, and for a screening where I will project directly from a tape laydown, how do I handle that?  and can I laydown to a miniDV tape in 1:1 or will I have to take the project to a Symphony.  [I have MC 2.8].  I could also project from a DVD, so would I really see a difference from the tape?

Or do I have to rerender everything?

Never done this step before, so confused.

    Thanks.

Yes, you can render just the top layer and definitely go 1:1 for best picture quality, assuming your final timeline is constructed with 1:1 resolution. If not, consider recapturing. And again, for maximum quality, I would recommend a realtime playout of your 1:1 timeline to a stand alone DVD recorder. You do not need to go to Symphony to do this. And forget tape, except as a back up.

All of this predicated on a large screen presentation.

    Hope this helps

Re: render for a screening for quality

Thanks.  It was all captured 1:1, no problems there.  So I'll just rerender the top layer, the color correction.

I've heard of this real time playback to a DVD recorder.  I have an external recordable DVD drive, the Sony VRD MC3.  But what you are suggesting seems like another kind of recorder.  Is this true?  Or is it just something you set up in MC 2.8 and then "record" to the drive?  If that is true, then where in MC do you set that up?

If so, what exactly do I look for in a machine?  or give me an example, and I'll look at the details online.

    Thanks.

No you're right, I'm talking about a stand alone DVD Recorder/player. We use a Pioneer and on Monday I can give you the specific model number.

Your Sony VRD MC3 looks like it's up to the task.

     Thanks again.

If you could give me the Pioneer model number just in case I'd appreciate it.

Plus, just how do I set up MC to do this? is this the same as laying to tape?  Which I also have never done.

Have a good weekend.  I just OD'd on Michael Phelps, Dara Torres, and Usain Bolt.  What an evening.

    Best.
