Can the Nitris output P instead of Psf?

We just bought a new Sony Bravia kdl-46wl135 as a client monitor in our bay but we have had some problems getting the signal correct. We have a Aja HI-5 mini converter to change the signal from SDI to HDMI and it does not work with segmented frame projects. We have borrowed the AJA HDP that does a forced pulldown and that works fine with a DVI to HDMI adapter in a 23.98psf project. Unfortunately we are back to the HI-5 and an unsupported signal on the tv when going directly out from the Nitris. We have clients coming here in the next hour so we are actually running the signal through our Teranex to change it to true progresive so we can get an image on the TV. I am hoping there is a way the Nitris can do a de-interlace of sorts so that we can get a true Progressive frame instead of having to do a pulldown to get an image directly from the Nitris.

On a side note we set our Teranex up with an input format of 1080p 23.98 instead of Psf and output of 1080p 23.98 and you can see the segmented frames on the screen. This proving that the Nitris is outputting Psf instead of Progressive which we orignally thought the opposite of.

You have discovered the dirty little secret of trying to use HDMI inputs to consumer level monitors with psf. It doesn't work.

Do you have component inputs on that monitor? Use those for now as they will work.

If the Nitris were to output Progressive, exactly which deck would you capture that to?

We tried the componet before and it did not work. We are most likely just going to set up the video out tool to do a crossconvert to 59.94.

We would still dump at Psf of course to a HDcam deck but we were wondering if the Nitris could do a crossconvert to progressive like the teranex while cutting.

Setting the Video Output Tool to Crossconvert is how I get around it.

Re: Can the Nitris output P instead of Psf?

correct me if i'm wrong, but afaik sdi does not support real progressive transmissions.

everything is transmitted in interlace mode, even if it is progressive.

that's what psf is for. but finally psf & i is the same via sdi.

so i think your monitor only connects to consumer-signals, which are supporting real progressive modes.

Re: Can the Nitris output P instead of Psf?

'sdi does not support real progressive transmissions'

That is incorect. HD-SDI interface, as described by SMPTE292M standard supports true progressive(p), progressive segmented frame(psF) and interlace(i) formats.

There are decks out there that REC/PB all three flavors also, like the Panasonic AJ-HD3700B.

Nitris box itself works in true progressive when in 720p.

to get back to the original question, 3 conditions must be met at once for  23.98psF to be displayed on the monitor: 1) the LCD panel itself supports 47Hz rates - mind you not all of them are capable of that, most lock between 55-65 Hz, 2)the processing engine needs to be psF 'aware', and again able to synchronize at 47Hz - traditionally, but not necessarily, the feature is present in SONY equipment, as they were the developers of psF, 3)HDMI standard does not support psF currently, so the original poster needs to focus on the component input, as Terry mentioned. He might have a chance.

    cheers,
