Huh? [:^)] Boris messing with gfx quality

I'm doing a simple logo anim on the timeline with elements prepared in Photoshop in the usual completely ordinary way. It's a regular standard def NTSC/30i project.

I saved the merged multi-layer version in Photoshop, imported as sequence of layers, manipulated the layers on the timeline for the movements. Beautiful, no problem. (And no AE, which is why I am doing it this way).

On an empty layer above everything, I have added the Boris Advanced Lens Flare. When I monitor without the lens flare, graphics are nice and crisp. When I monitor with lens flare (and render, of course) the graphics look like they are displaying a single field only.

I have tried rendering everything. I have tried promoting all effects to HQ. I have tried altering parameters on the Boris Advanced Lens Flare. I have shut the system completely down, shut off the Adrenaline, restarted and re-launched Avid. Nothing makes any difference. No lighting FX, pretty graphics. Add lighting FX, ugly graphics.

No changes have been made to the system, no software has been installed. The system was set up by our in-company Avid-trained folks. It has worked fine out of the box from day one.

Your ideas and comments are welcome!

Re: Boris messing with gfx quality

     Hello Paris MKVI,

I once had the same problem after re-installing Boris after an Avid upgrade.  The problem was that I had installed Boris in the wrong AFX plugin folder.  There (were then) two folders for AVX plugins.  One of them is for (not in front of my machine now... I'm going by memory) AVX 1 and the other is for AVX 2.  I had installled Boris into the wrong folder.  Re-installing into the other folder, the correct folder, fixed the issue.

    Hope this helps.

If they're not right, can I simply move them? Or will a re-install be required?

Re: Boris messing with gfx quality

No, you should just be able to move them into the AVX1 folder and re-launch and you'll be good to go. That is, as long as the Boris main application is already installed.

Re: Boris messing with gfx quality

Some Boris effects are dependent on your Open GL hardware, and if you don't have the right card/driver combo, this can cause the sort of problem you are describing.  There is info on the Boris support site about this - if you can't find it - let me know here and I'll dig around and try to relocate it.

(This was a problem I simply couldn't fix on my old xw8000, but now I'm on a xw8400 it's gone away)

    Hmmm. OK.

Moving the plug-ins didn't fix it. Our BCC version is 4.2.2 and they're all AVX2. When I moved them to AVX1, their icons became blank and they did not work or generate effects menus. Moved them back and they work again.

Our graphics card is an NVidia  Quadro FX3500, driver version 6.14.10.9185.

That must have been changed between versions 3 and 4 then, because mine are in the AVX1 folder.

Anyone else have any ideas? I've had to put these spots on the air with substandard-looking graphics. I'd sure like to fix this.

Paris - can you bring your photoshop comp in as flattened and still do what you want creatively, to see if the problem persists? It's the only other idea I can think of at the moment.

Re: Boris messing with gfx quality

I cannot do that and manipulate the different logos elements separately, of course. But I'll try it anyway, just to see if it makes a difference. It would be an answer, even if it isn't one we'd like.

Re: Boris messing with gfx quality

Well, I tried that, and no joy. But get this - if I apply the lens flare to a piece of video, or the track above it, I get the same thing!  It looks like the video plays in single field mode.

I am unable to post on PigsFly, and I am getting nothing on the Cow, not even a response. ANyone got any other ideas? Even our in-house corporate Avid IT is stumped.
