Recommended laptops not enough, need advice

I'm about to do an expensive investment into a really powerful laptop for photography and video editing. Now, almost every laptop has that got daim realtek card and I need to know if there's still an issue with realtek even with Media Composer 3.0?

The computer I have been looking into is this one (think you'll get the specs without knowing swedish)

    http://www.ggsdata.se/laptops/portanoted901c88gtx-q9300.html

The sales spokesman told me they're equiped with realtek cards and that is the only thing that worries me. The rest of the specs beats the crap out of the "avid tested" computers for a price far under HP and Dell.

Will it work? Is the realtek issue fixed or should I buy a worse computer just because it has a soundblaster card?

    Re: 3.0 Realtek issue

    Hi,

    Glans:
    Will it work?

The short answer is, "None of us know."

The longer answer is the only systems and components that are guaranteed to work are the ones that Avid has tested and listed on the system requirements page.  Other components may or may not work; you have to try it to find out.

As for the particular computer in your link, in addition to the Realtek audio, I'd also be worried about the GeForce 8800 graphics card, which is not supported.  If you search the forums for "geforce 8800" you'll get a lot of posts about this card.  Also, I assume you're not getting Ubuntu loaded as the OS?  That's not supported, either.

    good luck,
    Carl

My Dell XPS M1730 works fine. You just have to disable on the nvidia settings "threaded optimization" to "off" instead of "auto."

    Sound works fine.

    Re: 3.0 Realtek issue

The qualified systems are workstations, not laptops. I need a laptop and I also need a laptop that really is powerful. I'm going to edit Red One material on this and I need the most power a low price can buy.

The laptop I linked to has a great amount of power and I can get it with windows no problem.
There seem to be a problem with 8800 cards and realtek. Are you absolutely certain you are speaking about Media Composer 3.0 and not 2.8?

This is the whole thing about this thread. I really need to know that the old realtek problems are fixed.

    Re: 3.0 Realtek issue

Of course I am speeking about a laptop. If you are lokking to much for the price you will just have problems which are much more expensive then a more expensive notebook and Yes I am working with 3.0. I have Sigma soundcard, this one works and 8700 nvidia.

I don't think you will find more powerful notebooks then Dell notebooks.

    I can't open your link.

    Hi,

Look at page 3, where the list of 9 laptops begins.

    Glans:
There seem to be a problem with 8800 cards and realtek. Are you absolutely certain you are speaking about Media Composer 3.0 and not 2.8?

I am absolutely certain that the system requirements page for Media Composer 3.0 says the graphics card must be a "Nvidia Quadro FX 560 or higher" and doesn't list any GeForce cards at all.

    Glans:

I understand.  Hopefully someone running 3.0 with a Realtek card will chime in and tell you it works.

I can tell you that I'm running 3.0 on a laptop with Conexant onboard audio and a GeForce 7150M video card and it works.  Of course, I just use it at home for playing around and there's no guarantee it will work when Windows does an automatic update.  (I know I should turn automatic updates off, but I'm not using the machine to make money, so I don't mind if it can't edit for a few days while I sort out problems.)

    good luck,
    Carl

    Re: 3.0 Realtek issue

But hte laptop is for more then just Avid. It's the "travel workstation" for photography, video, film editing etc.

The Dell computer you mentioned doesn't even have the option of 512mb of graphic memory.
It's also a dual core, not a quad core.

It's one thing to hunt for prices and there's another thing to stumble upon a $1000 less expensive computer that gives you double in power. The only issue is that it's a realtek card.

I really thought that Avid fixed the issues with them for the release of Media composer 3.0, but I guess the "we listened" approach was all about marketing instead of real listening? The things they actually should have listened too seem to have been forgotten. Only thing I've really seen that has been fixed is the 720/25p support... which was a bit long overdue.

    Re: 3.0 Realtek issue

Ok, here's a page I found with the specs for the computer I found...

    http://www.ggsdata.se/laptops/bilder/D900CDM_v3.6.pdf

Please, if there's anything that might not be working with Media Composer 3.0, tell me.
I really can't find a better computer for the price of this one so I really need to know if it will work or not.

If you don't know, maybe you know someone who knows it?
