Re: How to best work on two machines with same project?

Okay, here's the problem. If I copy all the .mxf files from my desktop top my laptop's Avid Media Files/1 folder then Avid MC will hang during starting up. If I do not copy those files into Avid Medai Files/1 folder in my laptop then MC startup fine.

Any suggestion to work around this and why is this happening?

It's not recommended to put any media onto the system drive at all.  Also, there is another Avid_MediaFiles folder that contains certain "special" Avid files (ie Filler and Media Offline slides), you're not trying to put them there are you?

Can you give us the exact path to where you're placing this media?

Also, did you create the Avid MediaFiles/MXF/1 folder or was it already created for you?

Thanks for the reponse. Sorry, the exact path to where I placed the copied files from my desktop to my laptop is Avid MediaFiles/MXF/1. That is the only folder that I copied files over and drop it in there. This folder was already created by MC. I just dropped in the .mxf files that I copied over from my desktop.

Re: How to best work on two machines with same project?

Guys, the AVID function for copying the media that you're using from one drive to another is called "Consolidate."  Take a quick peek in your help menu to get a little turotial.

But the quick version is this:  The Consoolidate function will copy over any media you select. If you select shots from  bin, it will copy those shots.  If you select a timeline (sequence) it will copy only the parts of the shots used on the timeline plus any extra frames ("handles") that you might want for later trimming.

If you want everything from your project, then yes, use the Media Tool to create a bin with everything in it, then select all and Consolidate.

Consolidate also allows you to choose which drives to look at and which drives to save to.  It is a useful tool that has been a crucial part of avid for decades.

Next.  You do NOT want to copy just the bin files.  You want to copy the PROJECT file.  The project file includes all the bins and information on what to do with the bins.  In MC, the default location for the project files is in your documents folder.  Just copy and paste like any other windows file.

You can feel free to re-name and resave this folder as many times as you want for back up.  I recommendt saving back-ups daily - especially if you're dealing with multiple computers and users.

    Good luck.

I don't recommend Consolidating if you want to duplicate a set of media, simply because Consolidate will create new files with new mobs, rather than a duplicate set.

I had the same discussion some time ago, and someone suggested that Consolidate would only copy the media, but I never got that to work without creating .new or .old clips, and having to link the original capture bin to the new material.

Also, Consolidate will put any media wherever it feels like it wants to place it in the MXF tree of the destination drive, whereas a finder level copy will have the identical MXF tree structure, and therefore is easier to update.

That is why I always use stuff like MDV, MediaMover or manual media management to determine where the original media is, then copy that media at finder level, preferably using Vice Versa Pro, to be able to do incremental backups.

Re: How to best work on two machines with same project?

I;m always looking for better ways of doing things. So , what's the disadvantage of consolidate?  You mention problems with updating, but you can manage your media from within Avid.

That being said, twice I've had issues with student editors cutting consolidated footage on some other computer, having some corrupt file and being unable to link back to the original footage.  But I honestly don't know what they did. It's always worked fine for me.

So - Plus - you can do it within Avid, so you press two buttons and walk away while it does it's thing instead of searching through folders for all the media.

Minus - it makes your bins bigger because you have .new clips.

Any other issues I should be aware of?  I sometimes copy media files using the regular Windows copy functions, but I keep pretty simple tape names, so I can easily identify (usually) what I'm copying from OMFIMediaFiles folders.  But uh.... yeah.

Oh, I remember one of the issues I had with the ".new" with one of my students.  He subclipped a .new and it was having problems unlinking the .new and relinking instead to the .old    Is this problem more common that I realize?

Not the way I'd like to when creating (incremental) backups).

I use specific drives for specific projects, then clone those specific drives to specific backup drives. ViceVersa Pro allows me to updates multiple volumes with a simple click. Much, much easier than in Avid, and very, very reliable.

Re: How to best work on two machines with same project?

I agreed 100% with Job ter Burg too. I want the exact copy of my files so that I don't have to keep copying all those .mxf files back into my desktop. Right now what I'm trying to do is rough cut and so I don't need to consolidate because of the many problems that Job ter Burg mentioned. That is why I used MDV or windows explorer to copy.

However, the problem I'm having now is that it seems like MC will not work (hangs during starting up) if I just copied all the .mxf files into the "1" folder. If I delete everything then MC startup fine. The question is then, how do I relink all my files? I tried the relink in MC and it's unable to find all my .mxf files that are linked to the project. Any other suggestions or ideas?
