    Export Uncompressed

    Hello.

I am trying to export and burn a DVD with no compression. I shot super 16 and transferred via DVC Pro HD. I have no idea how to export with no compression (quality loss). Any help on how to do this and the steps to take would be great.

I read on another post that you could perform a mixdown and then export. I am trying this now and would appreciate any help that can be given.

DVD's "must" be compressed.  DVD players cannot play uncompressed files.  The maximum bitrate for a DVD is 9.8 Mb/s, although most encoding is typically 7-8Mb/s

    Re: Export Uncompressed

Ok. So what is the best method for moving a 4gig short film to DVD without losing quality? I also want to transfer into an effects program, but without any quality loss. I tried using the AVI function and it disrupts and the quality is very poor. Any suggestions? I can get a DVD but with strong amounts of compression. I want the final product as uncompressed as possible thanks.

Edit: I just tried exporting as a movie, and received a console error message. Then it said a directory on my drive f. was not there.

    What is going on here?

Probably the best way to xfer the media to your FX program is via QT Rerference.  As for encoding for DVD's that's a huge subject, and has been covered in detail.  There used to be a post with all the tips & tricks, but I can't find it.  Perhaps somebody else will chime in with the link ....

what happened to that page on dvd settings??  i just check a link i had saved to a post detailing my dvd workflow (from a post long ago) & it says "this post no longer exists".  i hope all posts from more than a year ago don't "cease to exist"...

and randall is right, it totally depends on the programs you are using to compress, author, etc.

as for quality, find a program (like Sorenson Squeeze) that will allow you to encode to Mpeg2 from a QT Ref file (without any additional compression or format-changes), then encode it at the highest data rate you can afford.  if it's less than 60 min., has no more than 2 audio tracks & you don't need any additional tracks on the dvd (such as menus, etc.) then 8000 Kbps with an i-frame rate of 6 or lower (sometimes lower can look screwy) should look as close to "uncompressed" as possible (using a software encoder).  if you're using Sorenson, you will also want to DEactivate the Auto-Deinterlacing (by adding a filter with only that setting disabled).  that, in a nutshell, should get you looking pretty good.  that said, a havn't found a software encoder that can compress as efficiently and cleanly as the high-end, hardware encoders used by the "big boys".  (although the difference is marginal if you know how to optimize your software app.)

    good luck!

*EDIT* i just found this link that had a bunch of good dvd stuff.  scroll down to the heading "HOW TO DVD":   http://community.avid.com/forums/t/997.aspx
