really thought AVID would allow 2 of their own programs to hog a cpu TOGETHER but I see this isn't the case now!
They work together (sort of) for me on a dual boot MacPro.  The 60 to 90 seconds taken to open the other boot system and then open the program, whilst not ideal, is not crippling for me.

That is definately one of Avid's issues - not playing nice with others... even when it's their own software/hardware sometimes too. Confused

But again, don't drop hope. Many folks do get their home builds running happy. Change parts, one-by-one.. try the video card - that might help - then crank up to the large items.

AMD is not an inferior chip - just not Avid liked... but, broken record, folks have AMDs running.

There have been VERY FEW times that Avid and Protools have played nicely together on the same CPU in more than a decade. Users have been complaining about it for longer than that..  Recently Avid 2.7(5.7) and Protools 7.3 together on Mac was reasonably stable option.

My video card is NVIDIA 8800, which is one of their top gaming cards...so I know I have to be able to process AVID.

Please help, I'm so lost n confused!  LOL...but seriously I am!  What's wrong with my system?  Updates?  Drivers?  What?!!

Avid 3.0 won't work on a GeForce, it needs the 3D features of a Quadro.  But you can fool your GeForce card into thinking it's a Quadro card and then it'll work fine.  The chip for both Quadro and GeForce cards are the same, nVidia just disables some of the 3D features of the GeForce in their driver.  If you just tell the card to report itself as a Quadro instead of a GeForce, then you can install the Quadro drivers and the Avid plays nicely with the video card.  That's  how I got past that error on initializing ACPL Effects on my MaqcBook Pro running botcamp.  Now it runs great.

Here's how to do the mod:

Re: Avid error on its startup screen

Thanks Ham n Chees BUT I tried to follow those steps and for some reason I got stuck on step 2...my screen was missing one of the tabs for me to choose on their "walk through" tutorial.  I was sooo frustrated b/c I had the exact same card as the one in the example on their page?  It's cool, I'm about to give up until AVID comes up with a fix or I get new equipment/money!

    Thanks for the comment tho!

Give it another try.. I just did it yesterday on a machine and all the info is there.  You might just be skipping over one of the instructions lines.
