Long GOP Media Export (XDCAM - EX) - still a no go?

I thought I read somewhere that MC3 was supposed to address the issue of not being able to export long gop media such as EX footage to a QT Reference file.  Maybe I was hallucinating.

MC3 still gives me the same error (can't export long gop media to QT reference file) that Xpress Pro did.  Is there some way to do this or is it just not possible?

Having to transcode to DNxHD is a time wasting and unwanted step.

    Any thoughts?

Re: Long GOP Media Export (XDCAM - EX) - still a no go?

Did you watch the following tutorial I did for Avid a few months ago?

It may help you understand the Long GOP problem and give you a sollution.

The video tutorial can be found here:

    http://community.avid.com/forums/p/58803/329533.aspx#329533

(Don't let the Liquid to MC title put you off. The information applies to all users, no matter where they migrated from Big Smile )

Either open the 007LongGOP.flv file attachment, or download the larger Quicktime version of it.

    Hope it helps.

    Douglas

...And so will we. We'[ve had nothing but misery trying to export Long GOP media even when we do transcode it down to DNxHD. MC 3.0 is the only software where the process actually worked for us. This process never worked with AXP never !

Upgraded to Media Composer from Avid Xpress Pro and now at MC 3.0.5, but had to roll back to 3.0.0. Also added Avid Studio Toolkit 5.7 running on.....HP... [view my complete system specs]

The thing is don't peak too early in life. Currently at MC 3.0

Re: Long GOP Media Export (XDCAM - EX) - still a no go?

Thanks Douglas, yes that works.  The results are the same as transcoding the sequence.  I was hoping there was a way in MC3 to not have to transcode to DNxHD (or any other codec).  It takes time and drive space (especially on a longer project).

I think there are going to be a LOT of people wanting to do this.  I hope there is some solution.

Transcoding to DNxHD, although cumbersom always worked for me.  What trouble were you having in AXP?  Not that it matters now I guess if MC is working for you.

Re: Long GOP Media Export (XDCAM - EX) - still a no go?

    Javier,

I am not, as we say in Scotland, "going to get my knickers in a twist" over this one.

It depends on how you interpret "full native support".

    For me:

I can capture my HDV through the firewire.
I can add it to the timeline.
I can add affects and titles.
I can slice and edit and adjust the audio etc. etc.
Then I can record the HDV timeline back to my HDV deck!

I think that is as about "native support" as you can get.

Now if I want to export as something else.... then I am leaving the realm of "native support"

    But that is just me.

Those things aside.... I always consider it wise to do a video mixdown of any project that has a number of video tracks, effects etc. That way you have a timeline ready for exporting, without giving your computer the additonal task of doing all the rendering as it encodes.........

    Have a nice weekend,

    Regards,

    Douglas

Re: Long GOP Media Export (XDCAM - EX) - still a no go?

    Fair point Douglas

Althought I can capture dv25 and lay back to tape and export a ref file and seeing that a high pecentage of people export as oposed to lay back to tape I'd say it's a valid option that should be available to all without having to make extra media in a mixdown. After all we are just pointing back to master (Native) media with ref files...

    Cheers

In fact, Javier, the whole problem with HDV is not really with Avid's handling of it -  it is with Sony and the way they "constructed" HDV with those long GOPs.

Douglas, as Avid Liquid is able to handle and export long GOPs, let us just hope that the developers will pick some parts from that app so that Avid Media Composer also might be able to do this in a future version

Re: Long GOP Media Export (XDCAM - EX) - still a no go?

One of my friends, a longtime Avid editor, picked up Liquid when it came under the Avid umbrella and was amazed at its Swiss Army knife capabilities, and has relied on it more and more.

It would be a nice thought if the replacement product for Liquid was receiving contributions from the Avid engineering team as well as the former FAST coders.

MC users could also benefit from an App coded from the ground up rather than patched over. As Avid DVD(it) has gotten rather stagnant, a crossover NLE with integrated DVD/BD authoring that allows for pop-up BD menus and other kiosk or interactive public display/digital signage benefits could attract additional customers.
