I am looking for software to compliment media composer.  What I mean is - tools to improve on audio, like removing a hiss, or background noise. 

Premiere Pro has Sound Booth, and honestly, I loved it. 

I know avid (digidesign) makes pro tools - but, I don't need to make music or create a symphony. 

I  want tools to improve upon the audio.

The audio suite in mc is just not extensive enough.

Any ideas???

I appreciate the reply but I don't need a video editing program as I already have Media composer - and it doesn't seem wise to spend all that money on a program that is generally for video editing.

Audacity.  Firstly, it's free.  Secondly, it's capable of sample-based editing.  Thirdly, you can add as many filters as you like (some are noise reduction etc.).  And lastly, if you don't like it, you never spent a penny.

that is what i am trying now - but exporting and importing is a nightmare.  Getting chipmunk speed.  playing too fast.  or after i import a file from audacity and plug it back into the timeline - it is only mono instead of stereo - one of the audio tracks is always blank.  i have checked my settings over and over again....

it was at first a dream come true and has turned into a nightmare!!!

any help?

You appear not to understand what ProTools is for.  It's designed as a comprehensive audio post production tool for the film and TV industries.

However if you're having issues with Audacity maybe you could give us a step-by-step on what you're doing to get your sound in and out.  I've used it myself and have found it an easy reliable tool.  It should be possible to do what you need to do.

I highly recommend Cakewalk's Sonar and also if you want cheaper there's a nice program called Reaper

Yeah, I have never used pro tools.

As far as audacity.  I am exporting audio from MC 3.0.  I have tried everything quicktime ref, movie, avi.  48000 / 2 stereo

Imports into audacity - took a while to figure out how to get it not to play chipmuck speed (fast.)  i make my edit - reduce a noise.  then i export (wav) same settings.

I import into mc and then all of a sudden when i plug it into the timeline, it is only one track mono.  one has sound the other doesnt???

Ok, I think i figured it out here.  I needed to import the raw audio data as signed 16 bit PCM.  That is the only way it works for me at least.

When I did complicated work like commercials I always made the whole soundtrack in WaveLab, Samplitude, sometimes in Nuendo. You can start with those apps straight away, work is intutive, fast and those applications are very reliable. ProTools plugins in Avid was a promising option. But it's not as "interactive" as one can expect. We have bought ProTools with Avid. It could crash even in file browser and I stopped using it.

Thank you for all the input.  I actaully have sonar 6 xl home edition - but there doesn't seem to be fixes for audio - such as removing backround sound or a hiss.

Vegas is much more geared for audio than video (unfortunately). I would very much like Avid to improve on their disastrously poor audio tools.

For hiss/bkgd sound removal then SoundSoap may be your friend.

ProTools is what Avid wants you to buy.
