Formatting firewire drives to work on both Mac & PC… again…

    Hey list.

I know this has been covered before but I'm just checking again. I
have been contracted to edit some HDCam Footage. I am going to be capturing footage from a Sony M2000 deck using my Mojo SDI on a G5, dual 2.0 running MCSoft 2.8.2. I have plenty of RAM, 4gbs, I have 3.5 terabytes of firewire storage. I am also going to be editing on a Dell Precision M65 Notebook, Intel Core 2 Duo processor T7400 (2.16GHz/667MHz) Dual Core, Genuine Windows XP Professional, SP2, and 4GB-Ram. I am running Avid MCSOFT 2.8.1. I need to be able to use my Dell because I will be stuck in bed for at least 3 weeks due to some surgery I have to have.

All of the footage is shot on HDCam At 59.94. I come out component or composite from the deck into the Mojo and into my avid. I realize it will not be HD. But, can I do an offline Edit. Then when everything is finished, take it to a Symphony NitrisDX or DS Nitris or even a Media Composer Nitris DX. with a HDcard and do the Online.

Do I format the firewire drives on my Mac as HFS+? Do I format the
firewire drives on my PC using Macdrive as HFS+? I am thinking of NOT portioning the drives. Just having them each be one large drive. I have 3-1 terabyte drives and 1-500 gigabyte drive that I'm would like to format individually. All are 7200 rpm. I'm wondering what I should look out for?

Finally, is it possible to `daisy-chain' these drives.

I do have an ATTO, ExpressPCIProUL4D card on my Mac, but no drives and I would have no idea how to use them on my Dell.

Sorry for repeating a topic again.

It shouldn't matter where you format your drives as HFS+. But they must be HFS+, HFS, FAT 32 or NTFS will not work with a Mac based Avid.

There are a lot of variables with firewire drives so its hard to say if you can daisy chain them. Its very important that they are on a separate bus from the Mojo so you can capture.

To use a SCSI card with a Laptop you would need a PC Card to SCSI adapter.

To use a Mac foramtted drive on a PC, you'll need MacDrive.  However, MacDrive can be flakey.  You could also use Paragon NTFS/Mac which will allow OSX to write to NTFS.  As of late, this is our preference.

Thanks for the information. But, the consensus is, I need some kind of program to allow the PC to see the Mac drives correct? Either Macdrive or Paragon NTFS/Mac?

In regards to something being “flaky”, could you give me some examples? The last thing I want to do is be in the middle of an edit then suddenly, the drive won’t work. I don’t want to lose material.

    Thanks,

Neither solution (MacDrive / Paragon) are actually supported when it comes to using these drives as media drives. In everyday practice, it seems to work, but I have only used them occasionally, and never for days on end.

MacDrive allows a PC to read-write to a Mac formatted drive

Paragon NTFS/Mac allows a Mac to write to a PC formatted drive (OSX can already read from NTFS).

MacDrive doesn't always mount the drives.  It also sometimes gets in the way when trying to format drives.  And, it just doesn't support 64-bit, which many of our systems run on.  Generally speaking it owrks, we just prefer Paragon on OSX.

Have you had any problems with Paragon?

On Tiger I got a lot of weird things happening when I installed Paragon, they went away again when I dumped it!  Have not tried installing it since I went to Leopard. (lost interest in the whole Bootcamp approach)

On my MBP, I use Paragon so the Bootcamp drive is available and not problematic from the Mac side.  MC v2.8, on the Mac side, choked on read-only drives, e.g., NTFS.

On our TerraBlock storage we needed at least one volume to easily transfer data between Mac & PC.  However, for editing ,we only use Tandem (spanned) volumes accross 4 servers, and the drives are not cross-platform (it's an ATTO Express Utilities thing).  So, I created one volume that isn't spanned, and formatted it NTFS,  We loaded Paragon on the FCP 4:4:4 system, and we can read-write from either platform.  No issues thus far.

Since making sure the NTFS drives do not have any Avid Media folders I have not had that problem. PC / Mac transfers use networked local drives here.

Paragon (probably) caused a lot of crashing with both Protools and Avid on the Mac Pro (on 10.4.10) here so I dumped it. (not savy enough on the Mac to problem solve it in an economic timespan)

Dual boot Leopard (and Bootcamp) currently working well for running MC3 and Protools 7.4 on the same machine.
