brainburst: This isn't an either or proposition. There is no reason Avid can't write quicktime video out component drivers to allow other apps access to Avid hardware. That would be ENORMOUSLY useful. Even if it would require a reboot on a separate partition. It wouldn't hurt the functionality of the Avid software, which could continue to talk directly to it's hardware.

There is one obvious reason to not write the QT video output component. It does not work on the Windows platform. Avid need a system which works on both platforms.
Good point, but as mac users we didn't exactly get the same features and support from avid in the past...
anyways I think what we would like to know is were avid's going from here.
Is the current DX line the end of it or is there a cost competitive HD monitoring solution in the pipeline, be it a driver for third party support or not.
Just like to know,
we are the ones listening now...
Speculating is not allowed on the forum and there have been no official announcements for any new hardware besides the DX-es, not for third party hardware support.
Nitris-DX does include more i/o and a DNxHD codec which can convert HD input to DNxHD and vice versa. I think this is only important if You use HDCAM.
I understand NDX also takes over thin raster processing from the CPU/GPU.
