    HDV Hysteria

     greetings...

I knew that I'm going to face some problems with HDV but not nightmares... I have MCA V2.7.2 with DNxHD IO Box, I have got HDV tapes shot on a JVC camera; DOP says it was shot 60HZ (camcoder: JVC GY-HD200). As I got the tapes, I tried to digitize the material using a JVC HDV player (JVC BR-HD50 set on 60HZ) but in vain. As I'm making a new project, I found out that I don't have 720P:60 format in the format choosing menu. I've got

    720P/23.976

    720p/29.97 HDV

    720P/50

    720P/59.94

It seems that I got only one format that is supposed to be for HDV, as I tried the 720P/29.97 HDV format, and made the VTR configuration, started the digitize tool, remote control the VTR. As I activate the Video track, I got video on the record monitor (but it seems slow and sluggish) as I activate the audio track too I got a message indicating mismatch between what's expected and what's recieved. 1280/1280 720/720 30/60, it seems that there's incompatiable frame rate.

I tried other 720P format but in the digitize tool, I got (No input signal message whenever I try to activate the video track), same applies even to other 1080i HDV formats (though I know it relates to Sony). I'm stuck there I don't know what's the problem, any help is highly appreciated. What format should I pick from Avid?

    Thanks a lot

    Dan

The only JVC frame rate that is supported with that release is 720p/30 in a 720p/29.97 project. Media Composer 3.0 added support for the JVC GY-HD250U with support for the 720P-23.976/25/30/50/60 Hz.

     Thanks a lot BobRusso...

Do you think there's anyway around this? And do you know if - technically- we can upgrade from V2.7.2 to v.3.0 with or without hardware changes?

    Thanks

The HP xw8200 and Windows XP are fully supported with MC3.0. But you should check the system requirements to make sure everything is correct.

If you go to the Avid store: <http://store.avid.com> you can purchase the update. There are two options, one for $295 for the Media Composer only and $395 for the Media Composer and third party software. The $395 option is a very good deal.

....When is Avid going to add capture and full editing support for the now longer line of Canon cameras that shoot at 24 F ? There are now five cameras in this line which are out there cranking away in 24 F and we're getting handed the tapes, yet Avid doesn't support this important HDV frame rate (1080 24 F) in the HDV 1440 x 1080 format.

Upgraded to Media Composer from Avid Xpress Pro and now at MC 3.0.5, but had to roll back to 3.0.0. Also added Avid Studio Toolkit 5.7 running on.....HP... [view my complete system specs]

The thing is don't peak too early in life. Currently at MC 3.0

     Vet,

I use a Miranda HD-Bridge DEC+ with my HD-50 Deck.  It takes all flavors of JVC HDV in through the Firewire and spits it out 720P 59.94 through HD-SDI with either embeded audio or AES.  It works pretty slick.
