    Canon XHA1 workflow

I am trying to figure out how to get my Canon XHA1 and MC 3.0 to become better friends. I am having a hard time importing / exporting. So far it seems 24f doesn’t work (still checking), so I am using 30f now. I would like to start this thread to talk about the XHA1 and Avid workflow. I have done a lot of research and it seems there are a lot of people in the same boat. So can some of you guys that are using the XHA1 with Avid share some of your workflow formats? Example, what project settings do you use for the timeline. I was told for 30f  I should use the 1080i/60i, which doesn’t make much sense since im shooting 30f not 60i. Also anyone care to share some secrets on exporting workflow? I was trying to export then use compressor. I don’t want to spend too much time talking about my crappy workflow, so I would rather let people say what they have found to work. So please, let's shed some light on this.

    Re: Canon XHA1 workflow

The only way I know to use the 24f with the Avid is to use a DV Bridge. I suggest the Convergent Design HD-Connect SI: <http://www.convergent-design.com/CD_Products_HDConnectSI.htm>

    1080i 60 works in a 1080i/59.94 Avid Project Type
    1080i 50 works in a 1080i/50 Avid Project Type
    1080 30 works in a 1080i/59.94 Avid Project Type

There is no 30p workflow provided for tapes recorded in 30F mode. These tapes can be ingested in a 1080i/59.94 project only. There is detailed information on what is supported in the Supported Devices document: <http://tinyurl.com/558d29>

...Again, the real pisser is there is nothing from Avid in support of the Canon 24F format ! This is very rediculous.

Upgraded to Media Composer from Avid Xpress Pro and now at MC 3.0.5, but had to roll back to 3.0.0. Also added Avid Studio Toolkit 5.7 running on.....HP... [view my complete system specs]

The thing is don't peak too early in life. Currently at MC 3.0

    Re: Canon XHA1 workflow

I read found this in another thread:

"The Canon F modes are nearly the same as JVC and others are doing with a P. It stands for the progressive modes of the Canon devices. And because it is progressive you have to set the timeline to progressive before you start capture.

e.g. for a 1440x1080 25F "or 24F?" timeline you have to open the advanced timeline dialog.

    - choose the standard HDV 1440x1080 50i preset "I'm guessing this if for Pal so for NTSC it would be 60i?"

    - change the interlacing to non interlaced

for 30F you can do the same but you have to use the 60i preset

for 24F you can choose both presets but you have to change the framerate to 23.98 also the interlacing."

I have not tried it myself, as i already importing my 24f footage via Final cut pro, i then imported the files into Avid and i was able to cut them with the rest of my 30f footage that i captured in Avid. I am not saying that is the right way to do it, but it seems to work. I am still trying different settings, so if i find anything of value i will post it here. It would be great if there are XHA1 users out there that would care to share there success stories? As much as i like trying things the hard way, its sometimes nice to save yourself days of headaches! Big Smile

    Re: Canon XHA1 workflow

    Hi,

the only workaround I found was in this older thread: http://community.avid.com/forums/p/17073/95433.aspx#95433 . I own an HV20 what seems to be the same "f" format canon use in the XHA1 models. So it works here although I don´t understand why I have to deinterlace the footage in step 3 (tried it a couple of times with different footage and can´t see any difference at all between deinterlaced and only transcoded footage).

However I would really appreciate if Avid would finally take care of this problem (in FCP it is no problem, why it is in the best editor on the planet?).

    Re: Canon XHA1 workflow

Hi - right now the supported formats/frame rates with this HDV device are:

HDV 1080i 59.94 & 1080i 50 SD DV 30i & DV 25i and of course this is over a 1394 interface.   I do know that with capture it is support and frame accurate but digital cut is not frame accurate.

Let me see if I can get some scoop from QA on the testing of this device and see what workflows they had set up for testing.  I will report back.

    Re: Canon XHA1 workflow

For the Canon A1 and G1 - I checked and we don't support 24f at all and there isnt a workaround today.  I did get confirmation that the ones supported 100% are:  HDV 1080i 59.94 & 1080i 50 SD DV 30i & DV 25i.  That might change in the future but for now....... this is the deal.
