Hi,
I wondering how you burn DVD. I have DVDit, but the result is not very good. It looks everything brighter. You know, I work very hard to get the black in the color correction process. Any suggestion?
Thanks.
King
Blacks looking brighter and whites not bright enough is usually caused by mismatched color range settings. On import, set the range to 601/709, otherwise mc will compress the colors to fit into broadcast safe range, mapping values 0 - 255 to 20 - 235, so total black (0) gets dark grey (20), and bright white (255) becomes bright grey (235). On export from avid and import into dvdit the same applies again. In the worst case you end with a double compressed luminance, reducing overall contrast to a quarter less than what your footage originally held...
If you are working with DV sources, i found that checking "use avid dv codec" also mattered, obviously some other dv codecs don't respect the 601 vs. RGB settings.
To get the hang of it you can either try to fully understand which conversion happens when, and what settings cause which behavior; or you can just experiment with the 601/RGB settings on im/export until you find the combination that suits your workflow.
not a pro, just a teacher...
macjaeger, Thanks a lot for your answer.
Actually, I got wrose reult by choosing 601.
I think the words you used, "reducing overall contrast," are the best descricption to what it looks like on my DVD. Choosing 601 looks even less contrasty than RGB.
By the way, my original footage is DV50 shot by Panasonic HVX200.
Do you think it is because of the problem of Sorenson's codec? If so, I probably just need to use another software.
Thank you very much.

What problem with "sorensons codec" are you referring to? Did you export your sequence using sorenson codec? The better way would be to export a quicktime reference file, thus avoiding a intermediate file, reducing the number of format conversions.

That's correct, my guess was that you already had selected 601 and switching to rgb might help...
Good Luck!
Thanks, macjaeger.
Yes, I did choose QT ref. For sorenson codec's problem, I mean even though I chose QT ref, "someone" needs to transcode the film to mpeg 2 DVD format for DVDit, and I am thinking Sorenson codec is the guy to do the job, so I just guess if it has some setting problem that I don't understand.
Any other suggestions, please?
Ah, ok. I didn't see this approach as a problem, actually i really love qt ref files, as they extend an applications functionality without the time loss and image degradation caused by intermediate files. Exporting to qt ref, then letting sorenson squeeze convert it to mpeg2, that's the preferred way. I can only guess that sorenson might have similar 601/rgb switches for import and/or compression, but i don't regularly use sorenson, and therefor can't help you further.
Have a look at How to DVD on this thread. There are some good workflow suggestions there.
good luck,Carl
