need to make a 1080i/59.94 master from 23.94 HDCAM footage

IS it better to capture on a 1080p/23.97 project and then change the setting when performing the digital cut?

or work on the new 1080p/29.97 and then digital cut to 1080i?

Which one will look better on TV, no scan lines...?

I am assuming your sources are 23.976? If so, editing at 23.976 and utputting 59.94 via digital cut will give you the smoothest image since there will be a continuous cadence from start to end - even at edit points.

what do you mean by cadence?

Anything not smooth about the 1080p/29.97 ?

Its looking good in the screen...

Anyways, yes the footage was recorded with a Sony 900 camera at 23.976

Cadence is the 2:3 pulldown applied to 23.976p material to make 59,94 interlace. I really don't see how native 23.976 can look right in a 29,96p format. Are you looking at the result on a HD 1080i monitor?

Re: need to make a 1080i/59.94 master from 23.94 HDCAM footage

First I am confused about your reference to 180p/29.97. That is a different format from 1080i/59.94. Although they share the same frame rate and frame size they are different in scanning methods. So I assume you are talking about 1080i/59.94.

If that is the case you have 2 choices...

    1. Capture and edit in native format. Output via Digital Cut + cross convert to 1080i.

    2. Use the HDCAM deck's ability to cross convert 1080p/23.976 during playback to 1080i/59.94. Edit and out in that format.

Each has their own advantages. Choice 1 allows you to have a "24p master". If international distribution is a possibility or distribution format is not set in stone, 24p is considered the universal format thus much easy to convert to various frame rates including 'PAL' based (25i, 25p, etc).

Choice 2 simplifies editing in NTSC world. No math, no pulldown factor to consider.

BTW - you may want to check out the play only JH-3 VTR as it can play and cross convert HDCAM 1080p/23.976. It is cheaper than a CineAlta F-500 or SRW-5500 with the optional board.

Re: need to make a 1080i/59.94 master from 23.94 HDCAM footage

I'm looking at the result on  the JVC DT-V24L1DU

    http://pro.jvc.com/prof/attributes/features.jsp?model_id=MDL101631

On the computer screen you can see the interpolation lines but on the JVC it looks smooth thru the MOJO DX HD-SDI output.

Also when testing  downconversion to SDI letterbox it looked good on a regular TV.

I was reading on the Avid Help about crossconverting and they don' t recommend making a masterby crossconverting from a different Frame rate. They say its only good for preview purposes or for reference.

They recommend making a master on the native format.

In any case I have no idea have to take my 30i SD offline to the 1080p/23.97.

    So confusing..

    I really wish :

the DP would have shot at 1080i/59.94 resolution

or that my offline would have been at SD 23.94.

All I know is that the TV station needs a 1080i/59.94 and my offline of the native 23.97 footage was dine on a NTSC 30i project ( mistake!)

    Whats the 1080p/29.97 format for?

Sorry for the long message, but I've been researching all day and still at a loss..

Re: need to make a 1080i/59.94 master from 23.94 HDCAM footage

With HDCAM cameras you can shoot at 30p (instead of 60i or 24p), and this would import nicely into a 1080p/29.97 project.

That doesn't help you in this situation though.

I replied to your other thread about matchback.  You're doing fine - once you get the hang of matchback you're golden.
