    Force ignore a drive letter

    Hello folks,

    I'm using MCA 2.8.3 on a XW8200.

Is there a way to force the Avid to automatically NOT mount a specific drive letter? I just recently installed an EditShare system and now the Avid is seeing drive Z as a media drive. Drive Z is a locally mapped drive to an office computer used to share document files. It wasn't seen before and I don't mount it in the EditShare. It's being mounted just like the two other local drives.

I know I can manually unmount a drive letter, but I'm looking for something along the lines of a setting; so I don't have to do it every time I start working in a different project. I have selected "Filter out network drive based on resolution" and can still see drive Z. Drive Z will never be a drive for media (or anything Avid would use directly.)

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks.

you can add a .txt file on that share nammed Avid MediaFiles.txt - if you strip the extention off, that directory becomes "locked" out of capture and import.  the downside is - you CAN select it in the capture tool but when you do you get a cycle of error messages saying something like " you don't have permission.."  and you have to be quick with the mouse to select another drive letter.

this also works on the C:\ drive.

Very Cool! I'll give it a try.

    THANKS!!Big Smile

    Didn't seem to work. Confused

It was worth a try, though. I suspect it has something to do with the EditShare. In order to see the media on the EditShare, I must launch MC from their "EditShare Connect" software. When I do this, that is when I see the Z drive. If I launch MC from the desktop link, I cannot see the EditShare media (I can still open the project) nor drive Z.

    Thanks anyway!

Re: Force ignore a drive letter

What version of editshare are you running? On our systems the editshare connect app has nothing to do with media composer, ie launching editshare does not launch avid, you still click the desktop icon to launch MC. However that should be irrelevant, if you bring the editshare window to the front you should be able to unmount any drives you don't want and if you then click save current setup it should remember your chosen drives the next time you start up. we are running an oldish version of editshare so the interface may have changed but you should definitely be able to selectively mount drives based on the access you choose to give seperate editshare accounts. In our system everyone has access to drives G, M and S (GVs, music and SFX) but each editor then has access only to the rushes from their block, Only the assistant editor has full access to all media.

If you can't figure it out your reseller should be able to help, or if they can't I've always found the editshare guys themselves to be very helpful and speedy with tech support. There's a contact email address on their website.

SORRY Re-read your post and I think I had misunderstood. If Z is a local drive I think you're out of luck.

    siencs,

We're running a Metro with v 5.1.11. As it turns out, I was mistaken about "EditShare Connect" being required to properly launch MC. I was having issues accessing shared drives and opening bins from other projects that actually led me to an answer.

As was previously recommended, I needed to use the "alldrives" command in the console in order for MCA to see all drives as media capable (as opposed to "True" media drives.) This fix the launching problem (that I wasn't aware I had.) BTW, the MC launch capability is a new feature to v5.0 EditShare.

The "Z drive" I want to omit is not a drive I mount in EditShare. It's a drive letter that is mapped locally (using windows explorer) to a folder on another computer in the office, and MCA was thinking it is a "True" media drive. I simply wanted to block MC from seeing Z at all.

FWIW here Z:\ is a folder network mapped by Windows server and all computers connected to the server see the Z:\ including tha Avids. As long as I do not have an OMFI MediaFiles folder or a Avid MediaFiles folder in "Z" Avid does not bother with it.
