I love it when people who don't write computer programs as complex as say ... an NLE say "it is easy to include Feature XYZ"
Avid doesn't just code their apps to include a QT Codec in some folder, they code the FORMAT INTO the application for true native support. this is why it takes Avid longer to implement new aquisition formats etc.
it takes a lot more time and resources to do that. would i like to drop a DVD in my drive and do "File-Import"? sure, that would be awesome. but i'd rather they work on the next big thing than to play catch-up on something i need to do like 2 times a year.
And, shouldn't this be on the Off-Topics forum?
Happy Editing!
That's up to the moderator of this forum.
Yeah That's why I always give the programmers the benefit of the doubt. I've worked with enough of them to know that, if it could be done, it would be.

If it's only 2 times a year.... yes. But that's not the case with me.

But XDCam is a whole different beast...right? Everyone needs Clip Browser to convert that acquisition format anyway.
That has noting to to do with Avid. That's all Sony.
BLKDOG:Everyone needs Clip Browser to convert that acquisition format anyway.
Uh, not exactly. The browser software is necessary to view XDCAM clips and mark regions before importing, but the XDCAM clip import will still work without the browser software so long as the XDCAM drivers are installed. I have two platforms without the browser and imports work fine.

Sorry, I misspoke, there is no direct EX1 import for Mac. I forgot where I was.
So, if XDCam MPEG2 files work fine...what am I missing here? I thought the poster said his big problem was MPEG 2 from XDCam......
Without reviewing the whole thread again, I thought he was referring to MPEG 2 in general as a format especially from DVD sources, not just specifically XDCAM. But if he was referring to not being able to import XDCAM directly, he is mistaken.
I admit that I'm a bit turned around after all this too Larry but I was referring to THIS statement:
"I just bought sony XDCAM recorders. That's pro and guess what Mpeg2 SD"
I think he means: MPEG 2 is a professional format, not just a consumer format because that's what XDCAM SD records as.
The problem here is that everyone is using MPEG2 as some sort of singular entity, it is not. Saying "I want Avid to import MPEG2" is a lot like saying "I'm going to buy a car" (Everyone likes a good automotive analogy here on the ole Avid boards). Problem is, there are hundreds of car models out there. Now, back to the topic at hand. . .
MPEG2 can be consumer, or it can be professional. It depends on the codec used and bitrates, etc. There were at least 4-different flavors mentioned in this thread alone. DVD, HDV, IMX, SONY XDCam. . . Start factoring in frame rates, interlacing vs. progressive, HD vs SD. . . it's one of the reasons why you couldn't pay me enough money to be an Avid software engineer. . . you get one thing working and a whole slew of new codecs come out. . .
Perhaps one day they will get to your flavor of MPEG2, for your sake, I hope they do. But as Blkdog said, use the tools that best suit your needs, don't try to force your needs onto your tools.
SysMangler:Since that's the case, I wonder if you could open the MPEG2 sequence in QuickTime and then export a Quicktime Reference file pointing to the original MPEG2 and import into Avid?
Importing a QT Reference into Avid creates new media.
"Don't go by my script, they're always wrong." - producer to me while editing
Right Scott but, in this case, the QT ref points to MPEG2 QT files and won't import anything.
BLKDOG.
I do not have any problems. Not with XDCAM or DVD's I respond to the question asked in this thread. Why can't avid import direct from a DVD?
Please read my posts a bit more carefully. I take time to carefully your posts and respond to it's content.
You don't need it. I could use it a lot.
.
Great...take the time to respond to what I ask then...Why do you need it? IF XDCam isn't an issue and DVDs are less often, but you have a workflow to handle it...is this a MUST have or a "Would be nice to have"?
drbgaijin:I came from Avid/Pinnacle Liquid about 7 months ago. At that time I was exculsively working with mpeg-2 and m2t/m2ts files.Taking the step up to MC, I realised that I would have to change my workflow and my attitude.
Doug, thank you very much for providing the moral (bolded by me) to this thread.
