Where I am trying to use the key frame key (letter n, I believe)

That is on a 'Pro keyboard. The keyframe in MC is mapped to the Apostrophe key next to the return key on the right f the keyboard.

One of the nice things about MC 3.0 is that Avid provided the default Xpress Pro keyboard mapping for those of us who learned on AXP and then jumped to MC and don't want to relearn different keys.  There is a detailed explanantion in the Readme file that comes with MC 3 that explains how to load in the AXP keyboard settings.  You also might want to open up the keyboard settings and command palette to see how your keyboard is mapped and change anything to make it more of what you are used to.
