    24pa in 30i project

i have a strange project right now, because no one seems to know, what they were doing so finally me too... ich hope anyone can help me.
used to work in pal sd/ hd i now got an ntsc-project the first time.
it was ntsc by mistake, they shot in korea and wanted a pal-camera. they got a ntsc.
after capturing 25 dv-tapes in a 30i project, the told me, the source could be 24pa, it was filmed with a panasonic hvx200. so i tried to capture in a 23.976p project with advanced pulldown, which showed strange effects in motion. and strange stills with interlace-effects. i tried different timecodes as starting points, having no effect on anything.

besides sound was recorded in 25 fps with 48.000 an is sync to the sound of the camera, when i import it into the 30i project.

but the captured timecode is not the same as on the tapes. at the end of a tape there is about 2 to 5 seconds difference between avidtc and tc on tape. i capture with a sony dsr-11 and never had problems before.

so in the end, i dont know what to do. make a new project with 23,976p, capture all the material again and ignore the strobe-effects, can they be removed in export?
or can i edit the project in 30i and make a progressiv version in the end?

    lost :)

Wow... what a mess - the first problem is them not knowing what they shot...

Are you capturing form tape or form file? If tape, go to Film/24p settings and make sure you are set up for advanced pulldown in the cadence (if it truly is advanced...). Also check the cadence to 00:00:00:00 to be "A" and active. Try capturing. If you are still seeing interlace and stutter change the cadence to NORMAL (2:3;2:3) and try again.

As far as audio... the timecode will be off since the START is derived based on format and samples from midnight. If 48kHz, it will not go out of sync, but you will need to sync by eye and ear... I hope claps were used.

    Good luck!

well thank you michael, for the quick answer.
i am capturing from tape. i checked that advanced pulldown in the 24p menu. and the cadence too and did what you say - stuttering still existing.
if i change to NORMAL, its okay... but on the client monitor it doesnt look different from the material captured in 30i. can that be?
at least they have claps for the audio :)

    Re: 24pa in 30i project

If it looks like the material in 30i then you know you got it right. The Avid will remove the pulldown upon capture for editing, but when outputting to your NTSC monitor adds the 2:3 back in... the benefit is having a continuous cadence from start to end of program regardless of edits and can make compositing (if needed) easier since you are working on full frames. The other benefit is for MPEG2 encoding - you can create a progressive DVD for higher quality and your 23.976 timeline can play out to PAL 25fps in the end.... What we call Universal mastering (Need Symphony).
