So I just got back from the long weekend and fired up Unity.  Everything booted up fine and Unity is showing no errors, but there is a really high pitch tone or squeal coming from the chassis.

Anyone ever have this?  or have any ideas?

I think I might have lost a power supply!  On the back of our Lanshare it looks like there are 3 of the power supply "bars".  I thought there were only 2 power supplys in Unity, I guess I never noticed the third one in there before.  However, there are only 2 power cords going to the chassis.  What is the third PS for?  It looks to be switched on but no light or fan spinning.

First of all, what kind of Lanshare chassis is it?

But generally, yes.  A high-pitched (constant) alarm is usually notifying you that one of the power supplies isn't powered on, for whatever reason.  It died, it's powered off, it's not plugged in, whatever.

You mentioned that there are only 2 power cords, can you get another one and plug it in to the third power supply?  I would be the alarm would go away.

So the chassis is an EX2.  On the left side where the power supply is, at the top, there are only 2 AC plugs available, both are plugged into the UPS, but there seems to be 3 power supply units on the left side of the chassis.  I'm a little confussed why there would be 3 power supply units and only 2 plugs.  But the top one is not on.  It is switched on but the green light is off and the fan is not spinning.  I guess I never noticed the three power supply units before, I though the chassis only had 2.  Is this top one an operating power supply unit?  A backup?

This happened to me EXACTLY 2 months ago.  Lanshare EX.  Middle power supply lost. 

Call 1-800 - 800 - avid and speak with a support person.  They will give you the part number and put you in contact with sales.  It will cost around $400.00 for the power supply.  This is what i paid. 

Now, if you have extended hardware support, you shouldnt have to pay anything for it. 

The reason there are only two plugs is because the chassis uses two power supplys.  The third is a redundant one.  REPLACE IT SOON, ASAP!  You are running on just 2 without a redundant. 

When you get the new one.  Power down the chassis.  Unscrew the little metal secure strip on the right hand side.  Push the two black clips together on the left side of the bad unit, and pull it out.  Replace it with the new one.  Push it in till the clips engage. After all three are in, replace the secure strip.

It might not be a bad idea to use some canned air and blow out all of the dust in all of them.  I did that to mine and WOW, what came out. 

To get rid of the alarm, press the RED button on the back of the chassis.  Its in the middle on the top, by the lid.  Its the alarm silence.
