Maybe even the ability to *gasp* interact with some basic 3rd party control surfaces with *gasp* FADERS that every other cheapo app in the world has figured out how to interface with!

Actually Avid does work with various faders and control surfaces - check out the documentation. I have it working with my Yamaha 01V. Being midi controlled it's a bit clunky without a midi card in your computer. USB to midi is just too slow.
mine works with command 8 but i also have a makie control for the rest of the world
so i had to buy both and the makie was 1000.00 when i bought it and the command 8 was only 600.00 hard to believe that makie was more than an digidesign part the cool thing is with the digidesign command 8 quick mixes are super easy within avid just open the mixer tool select auto and hit record button and mix away over and over all you want although the makie faders are 100 mm p+g sweeter and they have much better feel

I am back after spending time in the penalty box.
Well I am running Le and it is absurd. They designed the system so that you send your project into pro tools, finish the mix, dump the mix to disk. Import the mix into your project and Bob's your uncle.
Apparently you are not supposed to think beyond that and decide, Hey I need to record 12 tracks of audio in the field, all the audio professionals use pro tools., I've got pro tools, I will hire an audio engineer to record my audio, I will import my data into avid, that way I will have all my audio available to do a rough mix.
In the end. I rolled back to 2.8. Placed the audio files and session files all in the Avid OMF media folder, put the converted audio files from pro tools (these are files that allow the Avid to play the audio files at the right frame rate) in the session audio folder. Imported the OMF sequence into a folder. All sorts of files load up into the folder, the original audio and all the new files that were created. At this point all the media is offline. If you try to import the media you get all sorts of errors. I then delete all the media leaving the sequence. Import all the original media.
Next since it is a simple basic sequence containing the audio tracks and as many as 450 separate clips I was able to select each clip and over write each one. This is actually the quickest part of what I had done.
The avid can suck in almost any wav file but not a pro tools audio file recorded in the field with out these additional files.
Take a look at the log output from pro tools. It is a text file. It is not even in a format the Avid can read with out it being converted.
It really seems no effort what so ever was made to integrate these programs other than sweeten the audio in pro tools and bump it back.
Very strange considering Pro Tools is used in the field by many professionals.
It would be easy to fix this. A: Have Avid recognize Pro Tools audio files and B: extract the time line information from pro tools session files, or have Pro Tools export a log file the Avid can read.
Now the avid is getting audio under run problems after rolling back to 2.8.
My client is now considering dumping the project. They are very upset with the lack of time spent on creative editing. I am hoping to win them back by redoing their demo.

hi
I always wanted to use sonar as well, but always had a problem when using an exported OMF 2.0 file (media embedded) from Avid. In my settings I tried to export with 50 frames handle frame, but was not able to import such file into sonar, and at one time it worked but the audio clips were moved and they were not in sync with the video and with each other. the only option was to drop the handle frames option. what am i doing wrong? can you give any advises please?
Thanks
Eyas

You lost me after this line. I have no idea what you just said. Something about ProTools and Avid not understanding each other's media (no surprise there). Is this a surprise to you? It should not be if you ever worked with Avid and/or ProTools.
That being said, I totally agree with you about Avid and ProTools should at least natively support each other's project and media.

Nik Nak, I am the moderator that deleted your post and I explained why in the message you received. It was a duplicate post, you had already brought up the exact same thing in another thread.

Protools can export any track to file so it becomes perfectly importable by Avid in seconds.
Protools outputs AAF's that Avid comfortably accepts.
I go backwards and forwards between the two apps several times daily. Currently on a dual boot MacPro with MC3 on one side and Protools 7.4.2 on the other side.
Not sure how you have got yourself so tangled up.

Can one say, install protools on a second machine and access the .exe file over an LAN?
silver101:Can one say, install protools on a second machine and access the .exe file over an LAN?
Best solution like that I heard of working was by networking the two machines whist using the same monitors, keyboard and mouse via a KVM switch.
The orginal data was recorded on a Mac with a digi 03, the orginal files are .wav
I tried exporting the the session as a aaf and a omf. The avid can not find the media.
If I try to import the data direct it says frame rate does not match, files recorded at 4800.
4800 is not a frame rate. I don't get that one. When you open your aaf are the files offline.
I see no problems going back and forth if your audio was originally captured on the Avid or your
project originated their and you bumped it to pro tools added tracks and bumped it back.
Have you recorded audio in the feild with Pro Tools and brought it in to Avid that is the question?
Maybe I shoould go back to MC 3.0. As far as Pro Tools le 7.4 I am currently running 7.3 and
qualify to download 7.4 since 7.3 came with my recent purchase of Studio complete 5.8.
(January) I e-mailed Avid asking why I did not get an e-mail with the nessesary download
permissions two weeks ago and have heard nothing. It seems when I upgraded to MC 2.8
they upgraded my profile. According to my profile I own MC 2.8, not Studio complete 5.8 with an
MC upgrade.
ProTools gives you the frame rate error because the meta information is based on sample rate. Avid handles audio using frame intervals. Doesn't DigiTranslator allow AAF/OMF export from ProTools to Avid?
And yes - pretty much everyone here will agree that DigiTranslator should be a standard feature in all Avid/ProTools apps. Don't get me started on that one :(

Nik Nak:I tried exporting the the session as a aaf and a omf. The avid can not find the media.
With Avid closed, move the just created Protools media from the new folder into an Avid media folder (OMFI MediaFiles or Avid MediaFiles\MXF\1). Delete the 2 Avid database files from the Avid Medai folder.
Open Avid (it will rebuild the databases) and import the omf or AAF.
Your Avid project must be set to the same frame rate as your Protools recording session.
Nik Nak:Have you recorded audio in the feild with Pro Tools and brought it in to Avid that is the question?
If you need to purchase DigiTranslator, there is an Audio Tech that sells the license on ebay for I believe $200.00 a pop. Once you make the payment he will upload the license to your ILOK account. There is an Ilok transfer fee you have to also pay.
as for sonar export dont export the video do that on it's own export .mov will work not ref but if the file is not to long i do a lot of :30 sec spots use avi sonar likes that better and set up a send to template omf 2 embed the audio no video then export the video then send to sonar when sonar opens just import the video and presto
