I thought I saw a post recently asking this question but I can't seem to find it (I need another coffee).

Does MC 3.0 support the notion of nested sequences. I'm assuming it does not - I'm coming from Pinnacle Liquid which uses a slightly different concept for its media tracks (where each track can contain both audio and video) so the idea that a sequence can exist on a single track makes sense. In MC 3 we have video tracks as distinct from audio tracks so the idea that a sequence could exist on a single track doesn't really hold up.

Am I missing something here? Is there a way to build up levels of complexity in your timeline by nesting sequences?

For video there certainly is.  For example, if you mark an in and an out point around a section of your timeline and click the submaster icon on the timeline (top left - looks a little like a sandwich) all selected layers will be collapsed down to one video layer.  You can step into that layer and see all of your original components exactly as you left them.

There is no equivalent for audio.

Yes, you can build a sequence and then edit that sequence into another sequence.  All you have to do is drag the sequence you have built from the bin into the source window, and then it is treated like any other source material.

The only caveat that gets some people is that the relationship between the sequences remains separate.  Every sequence is separate from every other sequence, and any changes you make to a sequence apply to that sequence only.

In other words, you can edit a small sequence and then use it as part of a larger sequence, but you cannot go back and make changes to the small sequence expecting those changes to be reflected in the larger sequence.

In MC we have what is called a "video mixdown". This function takes all of your video layers and composites them on a single track. You will find it under the SPECIAL menu.

 Yeah, but it's still not nesting a sequence like BarkinMad is asking. As mentioned in an earlier post, you couldn't make changes to the original sequence and have it affect the nested clip like "pre-comp" in After Effects.

This is a really cool feature that I hope Avid will incorporate into a future version someday.

 You can also easily edit a portion of a sequence back into itself by marking a region with the necessary tracks active and ALT + c will load that material in your source window.
